Hello! I have been an environmental advocate for decades, and have a few minor climate science qualifications. I’m currently a sustainability executive for a financial institution, working on the company’s net zero transition plan and ESG ratings, plus climate science comms for our employees.

This is Dr. Simon Clark, whose PhD is in atmospheric physics, and is a communicator on climate. His response to Burn Them’s approval of the Jackdaw gas extraction site in the North Sea is one of the MILDER reactions from climate scientists I have seen today. He lays out the facts very clearly.

Deeply disappointing to see Libdem leader now supporting more drilling in the North Sea - it will add to global volume of climate emissions, drive climate breakdown & send a dangerous signal to the rest of the world

news.sky.comSir Ed Davey says Jackdaw gas field 'makes sense' as decision looms for governmentA consultation on the gas field - located 150 miles northeast of Aberdeen - closed last month, with the prime minister set to make a decision.

This sign from Just Stop Oil’s latest protest in the UK really hit home for me that the powers that be, in thrall to fossil fuel industry overlords, are trying so hard to quash the message - that we need to be on a war footing to decarbonise and STOP BURNING FOSSIL FUELS.

New tourist advert for Wales! Just kidding - it’s a print I got from artist WeFail, which I found particularly poignant after the destructive wildfires across Wales the last few months. Highly recommended artist - website here: wefail.art

Really silly to see people grasping at straws against the reality of global climate change by still using examples from July 1936 (or 1976). The reality is increasingly obvious. Graphics are from slides in a presentation of mine, which use NASA/GISS GISTEMPv4 data (and their 1951-1980 baseline).

The UK partial eclipse was fun. During the full eclipse back in 1990 it was particularly eerie because as the darkness fell, all the birds suddenly went quiet. That wasn’t as obvious this time because there are far fewer birds these days.

I snagged a 1943 edition of Coleridge’s ‘The Ancient Mariner’, illustrated beautifully by Mervyn Peake! Iron Maiden fans will recognise verses below. What’s it about? As Dickinson says, “This is what NOT to do if a bird shits on you!” Basically, treat nature well or it’ll bite you on yer arse!!

It's very sad that the United States, with perhaps the best climate science, scientists, and science communicators in the world, has consistently had the very worst climate-denying politicians and governments. Why? Simple: The powerful fossil-fuel industry and the money they shower on policymakers.

The world’s largest sand battery got through Finland’s harshest winter in years. 2,000 tonnes of sand, heated to 500-600°C by cheap power, feeding district heating in Pornainen. And it worked. Result from one install: oil down 100%, emissions down 70%. Industrial process heat is the real prize.

Scientists at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany warned that if deforestation, which decreased in 2025, increases again, the Amazon could suffer “widespread rainforest dieback” and cross a tipping point in the 2030s. By @alecluhn.com for @NewScientist.com

The BBC News homepage has now COMPLETELY removed its Climate section?! It has now been relegated to a sub-menu via the "More" button in the right-hand corner.

Five climate scientists, five quotes about this Mach heat wave: “It’s uncharted territory.” “There’s no analog.” "Typically, we don't consider summer weather to be normal in winter.” “Once (records) happen, they can happen again.” “There's a very clear-eyed picture of what we face this summer.”

As already warm cities become more and more vulnerable to extreme heat events, or just the “new normal” of hotter and hotter cities every day, here’s just one more reason why more street trees and other greenery are good for streets & cities. It’s just common sense, really. Cooler, cleaner, better.
