If AI hurts us by atrophying our capacity for introspection, wouldn’t indoor plumbing hurt us in exactly the same way, by atrophying our capacity for squatting over a hole in the ground in the woods in the dark?

Todd Berkebile@tberkebile.bsky.social

If AI hurts us wouldn't, for example, Internet Search Engines hurt us in exactly the same way? We've all been using those for decades. Extending the same idea would seem to apply to nearly any new technology, like cell phones or email or whatever.

right wing propaganda depends on everyone pretending they're journalism

The hopeful bright spot here is that in an industry where dipshits fail upwards into being charge of larger and more important product areas, occasionally the person responsible gets shown the door and whiles away their days writing self fanfic substacks

To be fair to Steven, solving new and big problems is hard. Hindsight is 20/20 but shutting your eyes tight and ignoring all the internal feedback is 0/20. The massive leadership failure here is siloing all the teams and sidelining people who actually understand why the fuck anyone uses your product

“Apple, seeing these same problems (remember the “I’m a Mac” commercials) starting with OS X, spent the next two decades moving to new OS APIs for apps. It was not quick, but they moved the ecosystem and removed old code. Unlike Windows up until recently, where you could still run Excel 4…”

Wow dude. A 2 decade planned transition including a high performing emulation layer worked out better than just shitting out XAML placeholders that lack feature parity with no backstop. Too bad everyone working on Windows at the time didn’t point this out!

“Where we were wrong was in moving the ecosystem to a new app model fast enough that was safer, more reliable, more power efficient. A lot of people rebelled about this. They wanted the old Windows app model.” Imagine leading the product direction of windows and forgetting back compat

never overestimate the power of transformative technology in the hands of tyrants with vanishingly small imaginations

Aside from everything else, I love that this guy's assumed business model for artificial general intelligence is AOL.

The purpose of the Evangelical church is to be a permission structure for ignorant bigots to immiserate minorities they hate and pat themselves on the back for doing so

Jesus was unvaccinated? Jesus also wasn’t on Twitter and yet here you are.

If there is a gospel that can redeem, reconcile, and sanctify, it is a very different one than the one being taught in these churches. And as Jesus Christ himself said, a good tree does not bear bad fruit. May it one day finally die

I spent 30 years in the movement. I’ve been on mission trips, staffed camps, led bible studies, and planted churches. I’m ashamed to admit it took me as long as it did (and the emergence of Trumpism) to observe that this has always been the case

As usual, the value in cryptographic agility isn't ability to choose a different algorithm, it's the ability to reject and deprecate an old and insecure algorithm.

Republicans have had a lot more than 24 hours to decide where they stand on bigotry

Jen Bendery@jbendery.bsky.social

24 hours later -- not a peep out of any House Republican leaders or any Republicans in Congress or the Tennessee GOP at all about this. I go no responses from anyone I reached out to. Guess they're all fine with comments like this!

I keep seeing reactions to LLM coding tools that harp on how it saves people from remembering where the semicolon me is or how to type curly braces. Buddy, if that was a skill you prided yourself in as a software developer, you needed to find a new line of work a long time ago

No one has more contempt for Republican voters than Republican politicians. You can get millions of working class votes for the project of wealth concentration by promising immiseration of your choice of the many ethnic or sexual minorities those voters hate

Horror Author Reed Alexander@reedshorror.bsky.social

The MAGA who regret voting for Trump, will 100% vote for the next Trump regardless of how much of a racist bigot he is. They haven't actually learned their lesson. They're just mad they're getting hurt too. These people didn't vote FOR Trump, they voted AGAINST vulnerable communities.

I realize if you believe in the rapture you’re not that smart to begin with but how do you not see Donald Trump as the anti-Christ?

IMO the worst mistake people make trying to AI-proof their career is dropping everything to learn AI. It's like dropping out of math to study how to push calculator buttons really fast. The skill cap for AI is going to be your understanding of the underlying subject, not how good you are at prompts.

I don't feel qualified to evaluate how well an opinion mirrors authentic originalism because I think originalism is already inauthentic. It's like asking me if THESE reiki crystals are REAL reiki crystals. Skip me with that bullshit and leave it for FedSoc's Chick-Fil-A bag lunches.

Jean-Luc Alucard@newtonnes.bsky.social

@kenwhite.bsky.social I’d love to hear some takes on how wildly un-originality Thomas’ dissent is. Not a constitutional scholar here by any means, but it felt like there was a lot of contortion going on.

oh yeah, you want to use a library? use distutils for that. actually use setuptools. try easy_install. just use pip. actually use pipenv. for C extensions just use apt-get. otherwise install poetry. just use hatch. or try mamba. instead, use anaconda, or conda. no, actually, install miniconda

Look, AI is the future, it doesn't matter that half the time it turns out to be a mechanical turk. It's like how smartphones were the future, but for most of their first decade of sales, half of all smartphones were just refurbished Gameboys that were painted black.

I will not support any funding deal that puts money in the hands of Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem, and this violent agency. Defund and abolish ICE now.

A lot of our political discourse would be easier if we didn't extend good faith to people who would never extend it back.
