I hope nobody needs to hear this but as Saturday is Halloween, here’s your reminder that if you’re only kind to a child who does not speak when they carry a blue bucket, you are not in fact a kind person. You are not entitled to a stranger’s medical information. Just give them the candy.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

I mean… they’re not wrong. The election in Brazil *was* rigged… against Lula… by US right-wingers. Every accusation is an admission.

After a stunning election victory for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil, U.S. right-wingers are falling back on an old favorite: baseless claims that the contest was rigged. www.ms.now/news/flavio-...

Everything is Gender: The Final Chapter

lastpositivist.bsky.social@lastpositivist.bsky.social

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

Easy - they listen to Matt Yglesias because they like what he says. They either espouse his ideals wholeheartedly or like his popularist stance that absolves them of responsibility for following the will of the majority even when it leads to evil ends.

I suppose I care a bit, but only because some centrists Democrats are still listening to him for some reason. Why do they do that? No idea.

Thirty years ago I was on a high-volume high-aggro mailing list, and when someone lost it like this the tradition was for someone to take the text of the message, alphabetize it, paste it into a reply, and say “these words didn’t appear to be in any particular order so I alphabetized them for you”

I haven’t slept a full night in three weeks ahead of the polls opening in Brazil today. I might be shouting into a void here, but if you can spare a few seconds to send good energy towards our elections today and for the largest country in South America to beat fascism, please do so. 🇧🇷

My girlfriend’s 96-year-old grandmother, still sharp as can be but ailing, braved going out to vote for Lula. She lived under dictatorship and said she wants to die knowing her family will not have to live what she lived. She braved the rain and lack of access to do her part. A legend.

This Black MAGA creator says she “cannot believe the disrespect” after being removed from a San Antonio rally hosted by Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton!?!?! Why would they treat her this way???

It helps to understand the germ theory of disease to answer this question. The answer is no.

I don't mask in public much anymore but I do at work because I probably encounter 12-15 patients per day with contagious diseases. Does it annoy some people? Have I lost patients because of it? Almost certainly. They can see Dr Gator.

The monotheism book I helped edit based on the conference I helped organize now has a cover and it looks like preorders are available. It should be released next month. cart.sbl-site.org/books/140377P

He’s already been working on getting legal aid through the proper channels, but he has a hearing coming up this Friday and he’s running out of time. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated. We’ve exhausted the self-help resources available.

BBQ (smoked brisket, sauce) is close to a religion in Texas. In that it is contentious, very profitable & marked by bloody schisms. Edgar Black started selling BBQ from his butcher shop in Lockhart, TX around 1934. It quickly rose to fame, drawing visitors to the small town in Central Texas.

She also really debunks the common justifications about religion, region, and age. Your grandparents and parents have shitty values because they have shitty values, not because of anything else. They could do better. Anyone can use their eyes to see the world and have the correct read.

What Dolly taught us is that it is in fact possible to be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams of avarice but still be a fundamentally good person with a strong moral compass, and the only reason more rich people aren't like that is because they don't want to be.

Everyone was someone to Dolly, and she put every person at the same level. To her, fame and fortune were a gift, and whatever she didn’t need she shared. She taught us how to be polite, honest, and powerful at the same time. A legend has left the world.

Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school; she built hospitals & bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.

Husband, looking through a gauge stretching kit: None of these are small enough to fit. I’m gonna have to stretch it like I’m 16 again! Me: That’s what *she* said. #dadjokes #badjokes

I sincerely wish this were the worst thing I’ve ever seen on the Internet, but no. I was raised on Something Awful and worse. It’s pretty bad, though.
