I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
Kill them with indifference. Ostracize them. We've wasted enough time telling them they're wrong. Invest that time in your community.
During the brazilian elections we learned one obvious but important tactic to defeat the far right on the Internet and I think everyone should know it: IGNORE THEM! DON'T ENGAGE WITH THEIR CONTENT! DON'T MAKE CONTENT REACTING TO THEM! DON'T HATE QRT! LET THEM ALONE IN THEIR BUBBLE!

Its forever been the wildest thing being at games conferences -especially the largest ones- and the talk schedule is like - creating sincere art from playful naivete - balancing passion and health - how to dodge parental controls when monetizing toddlers - regrets from my 1st commercial codebase
making games so you can hopefully afford to make more games is literally a different industry from grinding up people so number goes up and it is harmful to pretend otherwise regardless of whether or not we share a platform or a binary format
I still can't believe there's a timeline where Discord didn't chicken out entirely out of running a store the second Epic showed up.
It's so sad lol for years I tried to be like "Look if you want more options and if you wanna be nicer to devs, supporting Epic Game Store is probably a good thing" and my reward for this was just Epic constantly kicking themselves in the dick.

I'm leaning towards this on the "capcom beat 'em ups are all reskins" commentary. This happens in ALL genres really. Folks that just casually play a game and it's _perceived_ similar to another in the genre will be dropped if the original is still appealing to them. See: Fighting Games
I think there's something interesting here about expectations that is really important. So, it is a deeply held belief that these games are shallow quarter munchers, before people actually play them, that's the perception there. If you think a game is already shallow and unfair, why learn?

I think it's odd to live in a time where we're just past the peak of everything. In less then two decades, billionaires have stripped all progress, turned to warmongering, and ensured we will all suffer for their pissing contest. That said, luggage wheels are great.
Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

this does inadvertently reveal that this is where 80% of employee time was going, too
In June, 404 Media obtained leaked audio from Accenture where execs shared that a big source of AI token ‘chewing’ is people just converting PDFs to presentation slides. Now, they're capping use to $29 a month. Employees are stressed. @josephcox.bsky.social explains: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-ag...

Needless to say I have no possibilty at all to start a new studio endeavor now. I ran out of chips to play roullette. Glad I managed to make it work for some time with great collaborators, clients, business partners and friends. Now, at best, I'm freelancing while I try to land a job.
Denying that privileged background would be actively disingenious and/or hypocritical at best. You . Can't . Start . An . Indie . Studio . Without . Safety . Nets. Yes, being young, living with your parents and no other responsibilities IS a safety net. It's is not just liquid $$$. (2/3)
As someone who has tried this _twice_... It's VERY true. AND also the level of privilege you need to have to even TRY is hardly ever discussed. In my case, my privilege came from a comfortable middle-class background, white-passing, no debt and at times a partner that made the bulk of income.(1/3)
The thing about being a scrappy little indie startup is that it’s a much easier thing to do when you are 25, capable of of living off coffee and takeout, sleeping on your friend’s couch, and have no kids or family members to take care of.
Great thread. "games are toys" has been very much my driving force career wise. In another timeline I would be a toymaker. Here, I make digital toys. And I have witnessed them become slot machines and/or skinner boxes. I hope there's a future where digital toymakers can make a living again.
We need to tear down the current system. It isn't working for anyone but the people at the very top. Video games were toys first, with art and technical prowess at their core. Then interactive games became artistic endeavors with commercial benefit.

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

i feel a point we're missing in all these people going "oh ai is terrible and bad and you shouldn't use it but /i/ still wanna use it and will" is that this is a white viewpoint
