The story here isn't the mess made while scavenging for cans. It's that our government have so thoroughly failed people, they've turned to scavenging bins in desperation. The "solutions" offered here are to the problem of *visible* deprivation, not the problem of the deprivation itself. #Spéirgorm

I'm truly stunned that anyone who claims to be progressive is giving any time to the idea that the DRCC consent video was in any way off the mark. It was fucking brilliant. It found a relatable, everyday, opportunity for adults to slightly adjust behavioural norms to teach kids how to be safe.

If you actually love your grandkids and want to have a relationship with them you need to recognise their personhood and their boundaries. Anything else is just you treating them like property and using them to validate your own need to express physical affection. That's not love.

Long story short, any grandparents actually objecting to the video are basically pulling a "Not all grandparents". It's an objectively true statement, but anyone who knows it doesn't apply to them isn't offended in the first place. If you're complaining about the video, you need the fucking video.

We've all done shit earlier in our lives that was considered "normal" at the time, but in later life we learned was harmful or unhelpful and stopped doing it. It's not an indictment of you as a person that you didn't know how to be perfect from the moment you left the womb. Growth is good.

If you're a grandparent and you learn that your grandkids may not always want physical affection from you, would you really force them to do so and in so doing undermine their education on a topic that could protect them from abuse today or in later life? Why would want them to be uncomfortable?

Historically we were told the exceptions to consent included adult family members, authority figures, your husband, the clothes you were wearing, etc. All muddying the water and making a complex, multi-faceted equation out of something that's basic and simple to understand - No consent. No touch.

Noticing that you've been unwittingly participating in the cultural undermining of that basic premise is upsetting. I can understand a grandparent having a reaction in the moment. What I can't understand is refusing to reflect on the message and seeing if maybe there is opportunity for change.

Despite what the culture we grew up in told us, the fundamentals of consent are actually incredibly simple. Immeasurable damage has been done by every caveat or exception we introduced to the basic idea that people can't touch you unless you want them to.

Response from Labour today. Bit middling tbh, but supportive of DRCC and saying the Minister's intervention raises serious concerns. bsky.app/profile/pixi...

I finally got an email response from 1/4 TDs. It was Cathal Crowe expressing support for the Minister's actions and apparently taking some credit for the pressure that led to them. He ignored my question "Is it your position that children should not be able to object to unwanted physical contact?"

With the combined polling of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin exceeding 50%, the idea that the government shouldn't silence civil society to please their own voter base is now a minority position among the political establishment. NOW is the time to join a party. Not after we've already lost

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.
