Huh. I wonder what the NFL, NBA, and WNBA have in common that they don't share with the NHL and MLB? Guess this one is just going to have to remain a mystery. 🤷

Well, half of this statement is true, anyway.

3rd shift headline writer @ the Daily Illini. Came in to start my shift; there was only one person in the office. He pointed me at a terminal, said "make sure the heds fit the space", offered no other words, & left. The Romantics were playing at the bar next door. I left at 10 & never went back.

This is the core proposition of behavioral economics.

I've been toying around a lot with the idea of libidinal rationality, which is when people act not according to strict rationality of maximising profit or returns or sustainability, but toward what provides them with libidinal satisfaction, which trumps everything else

I’ve said for 10 years now: the core of Trump’s base isn’t unemployed coal miners and construction workers, it’s franchisees and small business owners who believe that owning a Nissan dealership and three La Quintas entitles them to the right of jus primae noctis.

open borders now@radtranslib.bsky.social

American small business owners largely see themselves as lower-level rentiers in a quasi-feudal economy as opposed to service providers in a competitive market economy, and part of that means not having to actually be competent at providing services

I’ve been sayin this forever: it turns out that 45 years of declining funding for public education has maybe not been the best idea we ever had.

And to be honest, though the systems are so complex you can never prove causation, the fact that our descent into the dumbest politics follows on four decades of systematic, institutional disinvestment from the liberal arts seems almost too on the nose and yet here we are.

if Eliezer Yudkowsky was born into a somewhat poorer family and missed a couple lucky breaks, he’d have ended up as an archetypal specimen of your friend’s older cousin who keeps boa constrictors and makes you listen to him talk about quantum physics in his parent’s basement in exchange for weed

I need younger generations to understand how weird it is that trump is such a unique terrible fuck up that it’s actually correct to blame the president for a demonstrably shittier economy and costs

Bluesky should go back to invites, continue aggressive bot bans, create a Craigslist-style marketplace (since you’re more likely to buy/get services from a educated or good person on here than any other social network), and market this place like a walled garden protected from enshittification.

So embarrassing when people think the point of reading a novel is to know the plot, so a summary is just as good. The plot isn’t important, you rube. You absolute simpleton. The point of reading a novel is to find out what the characters are eating and start thinking about what you want for dinner.

In college I worked the graveyard shift in a coffee shop that shared basement space with a bar that had a cooler with this exact latch. Let’s just say that that coffee shop was my friends’ favorite after hours spot.

Here I invite you to be a micro-heretic. To bring small shame on your people. Tell me about a highly praised thing in your hometown/area that all locals LOVE except YOU. I’m from the Seattle area. Taco Time is nothing special. Bland. Not horrible but not worth going out of your way. Now you go!

NYC's response to the Knicks' run is an explicit rejection of Trumpism. Civic engagement is at an all-time high. Fearmongering about public safety was crushed by the hundreds of spontaneous watch parties. Unimaginably diverse groups rallying behind a sense of collective identity.
