I mean, the latter is pursuing a kind of Working Class that hasn't really existed (if it ever did) since 1975, so you just end up with frauds like Platner.
In fact I will say the Earnest and Pious Charismatic Ethnic Minority political figure (AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed) has been a pretty good bet for the American left so far, whereas the Disaffected Gruff White Guy Showcasing True Masculinity (Fetterman, Platner) has been a worse bet. Just an observation.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
I am old enough to remember when politicians felt the need to hide behind euphemism and obfuscation. As frustrating as these obfuscations were I hope it is becoming clear to all that they were an advance, historically speaking

More substantively, one of the biggest problems we face is the power of trans-national capitalism, which props up fascist forces across borders. I don't know how you fight that other than international solidarity.
I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.
Kavanaugh stops in action: ICE tackled a non-verbal kid near his school, left him with injuries requiring surgery, and then left the scene when they realized he wasn't the person they were looking for www.independent.com/2026/10/23/i...
A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women.

I still can't get over certain people who aggressively went after people (including Palestinians!) who refused to vote for Harris in 2024 who are now (and have been for a while) saying people shouldn't vote for certain candidates b/c of their stance no trans issues!
Everyone thought Lula was cooked, hopeless. Then he bought a phone and started posting and now he's gonna get a 4th term. The lesson is to never stop posting.
I think it's also b/c you can yell at them online, and they might respond whereas the folks actually w/ power (i.e. the politicians) are just going to ignore you.
I think people intuitively understand that democratic candidates tossing trans kids to the wolves is not only morally repugnant but also politically ineffective, otherwise they wouldn't freak out every time someone said they weren't voting for a democrat who did this
here, write it down so it’s easy to repeat:
an illegitimate supreme court allowed an insurrectionist barred by the 14th amendment to take office and his pardons aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on

More seriously, I always stress to my students that, in the US, we functionally had open borders until the 1920s (working-class Chinese excepted).
I was talking to my mom just yesterday about how easy it was to go back and forth Mexico as recently as the '90s.
Freedom of movement is the most fundamental human right; everything else is built on top of it. The 20th century was a campaign to smother that freedom and we should not let it win
our institutions have stopped hiring, we've been telling students not to pursue advanced study, and to the extent that humanists have mounted a defence, it's been by pleading our utility as an adjunct of STEM disciplines and professional schools
in short, it all worked
Humanities dissertations have fallen by 49 percent since 2015, compared with a drop of 4.5 percent in the social sciences, according to a new analysis of nearly 445,000 dissertations in these two fields over 65 years. Explore the data: https://chroni.cl/4yxUZ4S
Yglesias really gets under my skin, because he paints himself as practical rather than idealistic, and a lot of idealists tell at him for not being idealistic, which reinforces the idea that he is just so practical so he doesn't have to face that he is also a dumbass.
🧵 Matt Yglesias is one of the biggest reasons the Democratic Party leadership is so feckless, cowardly, and lazy.
I'm not exaggerating. Yglesias is often a featured speaker at private Democratic Party events, despite almost always being wrong. Let's discuss...

Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028."
Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"
this is not a person. you cannot watch this and think that thing sitting across from Mehdi is a real human being. it feels nothing and believes nothing. it has no immortal soul. there is nothing inside it. if you cut it open you'd find old fiberglass insulation and mouse skeletons.

Main takeaway from the NYT Iowa focus group is that none of these voters really know what’s going on and they barely know anything about the candidates running in either statewide election lmao
Every year, Research!America does a poll that asks,
"Can you name a living scientist?"
In January 2026, 76% of respondents said "no."
Of those who said "yes," 5% named a scientist who was, in fact, dead.

Democrats are still stuck in "workforce readiness" and the transactional job training paradigm of the neoliberal university. The Republican Party, conversely, as it's moved toward fascism and authoritarianism, has rediscovered that the things we believe about our country and its people matter.
I think the simple answer is they (or at least their donors) buy into the market-oriented idea of education pushed over the last several decades. They are ideologically opposed to this.
Do Democrats not see that the effort to build civic centers using taxpayer dollars and private funding at public universities is an effort to shape future voting preferences against them? Why aren’t rich Democrats counter the Right and funding normal humanities departments?
It’s striking how much of the higher ed organizing on the political Right is focused on the epistemic content of teaching and scholarship - and how there is basically not much of a response to that from either scholarly associations or the political Left.

Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.

As a historian of the American South, I always found it fascinating the lies southerners told themselves to make their world "work:" our slaves love us, the war wasn'ta bout slavery, just white supremacy itself.
I think people have always been "like this," although it's definitely more blatant.
Just been such a revolution in my worldview to realise that people like Musk actually believe this, this isn't just the nonsense they feed the rubes so they can do coldly rational mercantile calculations in smokey rooms among themselves. No. It's rubes all the way down, they're that stupid.
To be clear, I have always struggled with this (as do my students) b/c it's so hard to understand other people living in an obvious fantasy and then convincing other people to join them in it.
