Many Trump voters actively knew and supported his worst policies like tariffs, pardons for J6 criminals, and millions of deportations. But because he contradicts himself constantly and lies constantly, many people didn't believe or know what Trump's policies were: www.nytimes.com/2024/07/16/u...
The media cover politicians' agendas so little that the extreme policy views of Republicans receive almost no attention in the public mind. In fact, many Republican leaners literally do not believe you when you tell them what Republicans actually want. We need more media. /end
PS: Conversing with @scottwhitegloves.bsky.social down-thread, I realized I should have linked a story of how Trump repeatedly lied about his Project 2025 support. We knew he was lying. The media often just parroted the lies. We need ways to break through the lies w/our own media.

Trump is a con man. And while liberal political junkies like us saw through him long ago, many people (especially ones too young to vote in 2020) didn't know him. Lots of his voters opposed Trump's worst policies, but they hated Biden so much, they backed Trump anyway. They were chumps, alas.
This is the libertarian disease. They have moved two notches to the left of "repeal the 19th/segregation is liberty/America4Jesus" and they think this makes themselves unpredictable and interesting. No, just makes you a Republican who sometimes likes bodily autonomy.
I find it interesting (not in a good way) that so many people I respect take Yglesias at least somewhat seriously. He's a bright guy with one weird take: framing utterly conventional opinion having as bold contrarianism. He gets to be a courageous truth-teller in defense of banal centrism.

Donald Trump saying Barack Obama isn't a smart guy will be in heavy contention for 2026's Least Self-Aware Remark.
Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

New from me at @flux.community: It’s time for Dems to attack authoritarian maneuvers like the targeting of Rep. Ilhan Omar both as dangers to the republic AND as exposing the deep vulnerabilities of MAGA’s bleakly racist vision for America. 1/x plus.flux.community/p/in-despera...

2) Lula was the first candidate to win in a runoff after initially placing second. This is unusual but expected given past polling, which placed him ahead of Bolsonaro in the first round. Some Lula supporters only voted in 2nd round. First round polls: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion...

Matt Yglesias—an incurious man who *sincerely* believes Dems should ignore fascists' international organizational techniques, and believes conservative positions have majority support *even when polls refute it*—wouldn't matter at all, except that Dems' congressional leaders seem to view him as God.
🧵 Matt Yglesias is one of the biggest reasons the Democratic Party leadership is so feckless, cowardly, and lazy. I'm not exaggerating. Yglesias is often a featured speaker at private Democratic Party events, despite almost always being wrong. Let's discuss...

This is why Anthropic is filing and not OpenAI. Enterprise is the way that most advanced technologies get commercially propagated. Consumer comes second as prices fall.
FEDWATCH: “.. The filing's key message appears to be that Anthropic is no longer a consumer chatbot story. Roughly three-quarters to four-fifths of revenue comes from enterprise and API usage, making it fundamentally an AI infrastructure/software platform.” $ANT

In the 2024 election, more people who voted backed Trump. But the people who did not also supported him. This is the unpleasant reality that Democrats must confront. We need to be able to persuade more people. What the party has been doing is lacking. We must build. There isn't an alternative.
The policies of Kamala Harris were much more popular than her candidacy. People agreed with her over Trump and yet still supported him. You have to address that reality. Obviously, there are many people who voted for Trump who didn't know what he stood for. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/int...

laborers i know listen to podcasts, radio, watch tv, scroll fb, or chat w other guys at work or at the bar who listen/watch. & they get nra mags who tell em how to vote. right wing dominates media- there is no “ liberal media” so whatever they’re accessing is skewing. r misinformed vs low info …
Exactly. Saying Democrats can be better communicators is saying they have agency to learn and grow. We have to be communicating all the time, and Zohran Mamdani is one of the very best at doing this.
This!!! When I bitch about Obama and Biden letting Trump happen, and not being frightened enough, among the biggest failures was messaging. Compare to @mayor.nyc.gov

It's fun sometimes to indulge in a category error by dunking on people I don't know because they believe dumb things. But I also know I've believed a lot of dumb things. People believe dumb things for understandable reasons. And believing you can write them all off is...pretty dumb.
One of the things most upsetting to me about people who hate on low-information voters is the assumption that they are all idiots. And almost always, it is well-to-do white people who say things like this. In blue-collar America, people don't have leisure time to watch CNN or read party platforms.
Winning a fight is knowing how to throw a punch, and to extend a hand. And knowing when to do each. We don't need to compromise with radical reactionaries. But we do need more people to win this thing. Here's Raphael Warnock on togetherness /end
PS: Please watch @brainwashingdad.bsky.social. It's a really great film about how a father got inadvertently sucked into right wing media and how his loving family helped him get free. www.thebrainwashingofmydad.com/streaming-se...
The worst thing about rapacious capitalism is that it takes away the leisure time that is essential for politics. Aristotle was the first theorist to really understand this. Our goal as the party of the people is to work for the people. To see them, to find them, and to help them come together.
Beautifully said, liz! It's hard to differentiate between "Democrats must do better in a rigged system" and "everything is the fault of Democrats," but they are not the same. You can't just complain about the system, you need to work within it and then dismantle it.
it’s unempathetic in the way that cuts one off from the information that’s vital if you want to fucking WIN
