There’s an older more sinister threat to American democracy that, despite the common themes and compatibility with various forms of fascism, is uniquely American, built on racism and long repeated myths.

Kinew calling to abolish the Indian Act could be a move forward, but given the govt’s historical track record, I imagine Carney will be viewed with a lot of cynicism. It would not be surprising if ppl feared him using it to sow division for his nation building projects, esp pipelines.

bringing up the eternal Indian Act debate is the easiest way to distract and divide us so kudos to that I suppose

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew told Prime Minister Mark Carney, premiers and First Nations leaders that it's time to abolish the Indian Act. Here's what Kinew said to reporters afterward.

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

After the first round elections, Congressman André Janones created a WhatsApp channel titled “Lula’s Army.” It ballooned to 10 million people following his commands on how to behave online to counteract Meta’s far-right-favouring algorithms. The right knows how to use socials. We must learn, too.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

the core point of the pedocon theory article is that some people are looking for unequal relationships--people who are easier to control and manipulate--and one very reliable way of achieving that is to go after young people

liberalcurrents.comWe Need to Talk About Pedocon TheoryThe connection between Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein is no accident, but reveals a deep logic at the heart of reactionary politics.

The reasons the woman in the video gives in favour of separation are provincial responsibilities. I heard the same thing when canvassing in rural Ontario. Are they being sincere or are these just said to justify a feeling? I’m very curious about this. www.reddit.com/r/AlbertaNow...

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

even by normal oppo standards this story is bonkers — basically vivek and co (and acton’s shitty mother) are accusing acton of fabricating horrific stories of child sexual abuse that are clearly documented in court records

“The modern right feels emasculated by the relative status gains of women, and in many this manifests as a feeling of being cuckolded.” I think this insight has broader application. The modern right feels a loss of status vis-à-vis ppl they think of as being lower in the “rightful” hierarchy.

There are some obvious things we could do to improve safety, such as bike lanes, public transit, speed cameras, etc. But these measures annoy certain car driving segments that vote for conservative politicians like Ford and Sutcliffe who undermine solutions. ottawacitizen.com/news/carnage...

An interesting read with several takeaways, but these two jumped out at me as being particularly salient today. Incisive and insightful.

"Power clarifies. Unless, of course, it is power without accountability. Power unchecked yields a different kind of stupidity: 'Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it’s probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day.'"

I used to think that being out of power for a long enough period of time might cause a radicalized party to moderate towards the middle in hopes of regaining power. But the CPC has proven my hypothesis wrong. And so I’m pessimistic that the GOP might moderate after one or more huge losses:

The situation is so fucked up and it was broken on purpose by the GOP. It’s brazenly shameful to make false claims of voter fraud to justify voter suppression and election fraud.

To the people who are still talking about how Canada is "not taking Alberta seriously" -- what on earth are you talking about? The PM is an Albertan. The leader of the opposition is an Albertan. Our national politics revolve around Alberta's interests and concerns. What else do you want?

Yes I was immensely foolish to have watched all of CBC's coverage last night. But I can't get over how ridiculously pathetic it all was. No discussion of what an independent Alberta would look like or what the consequences would be. It was basically a Festivus airing of grievances for seppies.

Are these the paid protestors that right wing folks keep talking about? It seems that if they’re engaging in something sus then they can’t imagine their adversaries aren’t also doing it.

I’m not claiming the rest of Canada is perfect because it isn’t. But unlike Quebec who’s harsh anti-immigrant stance is partly masked due to the French language, Alberta doesn’t have that protection. The legacy and impact of this referendum won’t be that remain won. It’ll be the racism.

I can say that I am utterly devastated to see the results of the “other nine” questions. The scapegoating of newcomers is about to get a lot worse and that is a loss for all Albertans and Canadians.

This touches on an important point. There are explanations for the appeal of right wing authoritarianism that are not based on ppl acting in their own material self interest.

The inescapable link is that MAGA offered working class voters—of all races—a set of individuals—government workers (often black women)—a convenient target to rage against—instead of economic policies that reduced inequality.
