Extremely excited to open up my email to learn that my paper from my new project is now formally accepted at the American Sociological Review! It's entitled "Energetic Affordances: Climate Change and Industrial Transformation." The abstract is below. I can't wait for this to be out in the world!

This is hard to believe. These bishops didn't realize that the photo op is the entire point of the President's team setting up stuff like this? Did they think Trump just wanted some private prayer cuz he's such a spiritual guy? I won't insult these bishops by believing they're that effing stupid.

And I'm serious here: if you teach a Social Problems course, DO NOT spend all your time complaining about how the world is so bad. Show your students that human societies can make the world better, that we have done that in the past, and we can do that in the future with knowledge & political will.

Samuel Perry@profsamperry.bsky.social

This is something I drill into my Social Problems students. If we can't point to a proven track record of applying science & political will to making life better, what the f*** are we doing? The answer to this question is: so many things. The world really is less sick, violent, ignorant, and poor.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

“Toxic Empathy” author Allie Beth Stuckey is now asking for folks to understand that ICE has separated a good man from his family over a paperwork issue.

Pro-ICE conservative blogger Samuel Sey, a prominent figure on the evangelical right, has himself been arrested and held for potential ICE deportation.

My fear is that if Talarico and Paxton go into election day neck-and-neck then it'll be Paxton by a comfortable margin simply because of Bradley effect. Many Texas Christians will be embarrassed to tell pollsters they'll vote for Paxton, but come election day, they'll do what they always do.

Among the numerous shameful things about this post from Graham is that it's premised on lies. Most Democrats do actually favor secure borders (they just also want pathways to citizenship). Most Democrats support voter ID laws.

A message from decayed husk of the “Moral Majority”:

Sociologists need to better understand the difference between "premise" and "belief." A premise is the social/rhetorical basis for behavior ("Let's proceed as if X is true"). A belief is a conviction that "X is really true." When talking about religion, you're looking at mostly premise, not belief.

There's a big difference there. When we define religion as social practices based on *beliefs* about a superhuman reality, we're assuming all religious people really believe such things. More accurate to say religious behavior operates on the *premise* (let's proceed as if) of superhuman realities.

So an atheist Jew who reads Torah, keeps kosher, and honors Sabbath isn't "irreligious" because they lack belief, but they are religious in that they are faithful to the premise that the practices rooted in myths about divinely instituted days, texts, and food rules are sacred to their people.

Incidentally, I attribute much of the disinterest in religion among sociologists to this phenomenon. I call it "reverse mesearch." Just like we assume stuff that's relevant to us personally must be worthy of study, we assume stuff that's irrelevant to us personally is surely not worth anyone's time.

"But how can we know what Muslims believe? By talking to any of the millions of them living in the US? That feels like a slippery slope that would take away my unflinching confidence to call for organized persecutions of other faiths that’s fueled primarily by my total non-understanding of them."

McSweeney's@mcsweeneys.net

"I don’t see what’s wrong with asking the followers of Islam to denounce the Muslim Brotherhood. It’s important for the public to know where non-Christians stand on every organization that has ever existed in a Muslim-majority country and every person with the name 'Mohammed.'" buff.ly/oFYteni

No mention of @marisakabas.bsky.social discovering his identity. No credit for her investigative work at all.

A young man asked Abdul-El Sayed if he would disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. The tense exchange has turned into a highlight for the Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan. Here’s what happened.

It's hard not to pair this moral panic with the burgeoning moral panic about adult children not giving their parents the grandchildren those parents feel entitled to. (This is separate from the general moral panic over low birth rates). rcobooth.substack.com/p/on-prospec...

there is a piece to be written about this "no contact" as a very specific kind of moral panic about status, intergenerational mobility, and maybe dementia. because it is wild how much this no contact thing riles up older people.

Across the country, hospitals under financial strain are shuttering their delivery units, putting expectant mothers at greater risk. As Trump’s cuts to Medicaid take effect, these “maternity care deserts” will only grow. newrepublic.com/article/2166...

Think that every time I'm walking down 64th and I see these things sticking out of windows in a 5 story townhome that goes for $8 million. Like, really?

The kind of AI slop I hate the most is nature photos and videos. Their very existence means I can no longer enjoy photos or videos of anything cuz I'm just doubting the whole time whether any of it's real anymore. Got pic of a cat doing something awesome? No you didn't. Or did you? IDK. That sucks.

Just came across this @ichotiner.bsky.social interview with Al Mohler when I was researching something else. Terrific job by Isaac, but what a gross display by Mohler. Flat out denying he's ever fudged on his principles when supporting Trump all these years. www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a...

newyorker.comHow Donald Trump Is Teaching Christians to Abandon EmpathyThe head of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary says that empathy is “used politically in ways that are very destructive and manipulative.”

Most revealing part of the interview was the very end where Mohler talks about the only thing he's changed his mind on is recognizing something more extreme needs to happen to turn the culture around. Subtle signal for "knowing what time it is" like the Schmittean far-right Christians he's courting.

Is America in a demographic crisis? Demographers don’t think so. I conducted a survey of U.S. demographers, and this is what I found: 3%: “The low birth rate is a demographic crisis” 25%: "serious concern” 53%: "should be monitored, but no intervention necessary” 20% :“not a problem at all.”

These people have an incredibly limited grasp of biblical theology, and a grotesquely weak hermeneutic. This is what Christian nationalism looks like in practice. It’s eisegesis all the way down.

I don’t necessarily hate the Wall Street Journal’s actual journalism. But their op-ed section might as well be Newsmax or Hannity. Just MAGA bootlickers and trolls.
