just heard that the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco closed down after not renewing their lease. for 42 years they had 90+ y/old animation cels and showcased local artists. this was one of my favorite spots when i was a bay area local, it's sad to see it go. hoping they find a new home soon :(

Creation of art (incl. games) is an inherently personal process. It takes intent, deliberation, collaboration, emotion, experimentation, and more. AI gen has none of that. It's a shortcut. It may still make things that look nice, but there's nothing deeper behind it. No process, no intent. Empty.

We at RGG strive to make games that foster curiosity, encourage exploration, and are just darn fun to play — and to do so ethically. As such, we do not and will not use any generative AI in the creation and design of any our games. Fun is necessary for people, and so it must be driven by people.

Why am I so against generative AI in games? Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

#Dispatch devs have no interest in using AI for game development 🎮 "AI feels like a production solution, not a creative one. Maybe it's a creative one if you aren't creative" "Whatever we're building, it has to connect. It's got to be made by people. It's got to connect to people" (via GIBiz)

Ask literally any voice actor if they get royalties from the video games they worked on. They will tell you no. They might even laugh. Now imagine any developer actively trying to use AI VO to save money wanting to offer something like that.

This affects you - the audience - more than you think. Because there are no residual payments on videogames, many actors rely on convention appearances as a replacement income. Because cons = $, cons have begun expecting talent to make it through YOU (no appearance fee). You’ve been tip-cultured.
