Turning off the intrusive AI features is honestly the most useful productivity upgrade Google has released in years.

I don't just want to turn it 'off', I want to eviscerate it off of MY property. Like with how I tore out the Edge malware from Windoze10 with the 1000C knife. Now it can't open their slop ever again.

joined gmail back when it was invite only and left about a year ago for fastmail i also deleted all my pictures off google photos and self hosted immich because i can't trust google not to use my photos as ai training data it's not worth playing opt out wack-a-mole. they don't respect you. leave

A little caveat: Canadian users have both off by default.

I switched to thunderbird on android because gmail kept getting in a mode that would not show me any e-mail, and there was one source that it would never show the e-mail from. I got tired of having to kill it and restart it. you'd think they'd spend more time fixing bugs than adding AI.
