Hi, I am starting the process of closing the blueskyfeeds.com feed service in early July. I am having difficulty dealing with site outages, issues with the firehose, ballooning cloud operating costs, and blocking users trying to 'stress test' with feeds that store every post (you know who you are).

In effect Bluesky will be indirectly deciding who gets to be verified, for a large part of the ATProto app user base. Bluesky's selection of trusted verifiers may then be a locus of controversy with possible calls for Bluesky to have a formal policy (like Mozilla's) re who gets to be a verifier 3/

I have a random thought about all of this and Elon. In Walter Isaacson's book (as noted by @davekarpf.bsky.social), he tells the story of Elon constantly going all in. davekarpf.substack.com/p/elon-musk-...

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Yup. I had "the realization" when Elon started talking about "free speech" and "content moderation," which are subjects I actually understand and he doesn't. And I still can't believe how many people still think he knows what he's talking about on either one of those.

aint that the rub. "We want a chronological app with no ads just photos!". "OK, here you go" "It's a bit boring". I'm not sure what the middle ground is, but I like the ethos behind Foto and hoping they find their feet.

Meta’s big bet is that people would rather live in a world they know is faked but where they hear what they like to hear (or simply *feel* things that trigger dopamine) than live in the non-virtual world, where the truths are.. harder. So far it’s been a winning bet. We need to wake the fuck up.

Whom to trust? Trust is relative It takes time to build your established online identity where others are socially verifying you by associating with you with engagement, linking and referrals. If you haven’t done that, there’s not much any third party can do cost-effectively. The Internet: WIP

as of this week, when you verify your account by updating your username from a default like emily.bsky.social to your website @emilyliu.me, your former bsky.social username is reserved for you automatically (and prevents impersonators from claiming it). you can revert back to it at anytime
