An investigation can be a prelude to accountability, it is not in and of itself accountability. And it's dangerous to conflate the two as if a briefly viral clip-of-the-day for the C-SPAN cameras means you can pat yourself on the back and say you did "accountability," mission accomplished.

That's not to say hearings and investigations aren't worth doing. By all means, be as aggressive as you can muster with them. Exposure under the spotlight does matter. But they're messaging exercises at best now. It is a category error to say they amount to accountability. On their own they are not.

In the before times, a catastrophically bad hearing performance, or revelations from a congressional investigation, could get somebody fired. Rarely, if it was really bad. But that doesn't work with Trump's minions, obviously. They faceplant all the time and then go right back to doing crimes.

"Accountability" is a nice sentiment but it's become a popular talking point word to use because it sounds strong while being totally non-specific. Embarrassing somebody at a congressional hearing (which Dems already do plenty in the minority anyway) is not accountability. It's impunity on display.

There is truly nothing you could do to make fun of the NYT covering the Obama Cheesecake Factory quip instead of Trump being accused of rape. It’s completely beyond parody.
