Open Source Pledge is a group of companies with a shared commitment to paying the maintainers of the Open Source software we all consume.

We've reached nine million dollars 😳️ Since yesterday (!), the amount paid to OSS maintainers by @opensourcepledge.com members has risen by $739,137 to a total of $9,160,672. This is thanks to a contribution from HeroDevs, who are worth celebrating for all they do for software supply chain security 🎉️
We just gave $1,000,000 to Open Source maintainers at @sentry.io, up from $750K last year! 🎉️ And this month the @opensourcepledge.com turns 2. Its 37 member companies have now paid $8,421,535 to the people who build the software we all rely on. Read on to find out where the money went.
Around 70% of open source maintainers work alone or in small teams, and most are unpaid.

Excited to be in Prague for my first #OSSummit! I'll be talking on Burnout in Open Source 11.55 on Friday, come say hi if you're around! 👋 Lots of exciting things in the schedule... bit.ly/3NXx5Zp

This already took a ton of work, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of what the dataset could teach us.
Such an important and multifaceted topic, thanks for the exploring this, was really nice to chat with you about it!
Big recommend for anyone feeling a bit off the more they use AI to code!

Today, we're launching a world-class research lab dedicated to Open Source sustainability with a team of some of the most experienced people in the world.
ScreenshotOne is now officially a member of opensourcepledge.com.
The pledge will help me be more systematic and intentional about supporting open-source maintainers and projects I value and want to see thrive.
If you run a software company that relies on open source, consider joining too.
Package managers support our world's infrastructure, but those who build them have more work on their plate then ever. Companies who rely on this work for their revenue should give something back. It's in these companies' interest to keep this tech sustainable.
Composer & Packagist now have a sponsorship program. Thank you to our launch sponsors 🤝 Aikido, AWS, Socket, Bunny, Upsun, Sonatype, Tideways, Datadog and Algolia help fund our shared infrastructure.

The Python Software Foundation is hiring a Security Developer. If you've got experience with Python, security, and collaborating with open source projects then we'd love to hear from you:

We are proud to have been sponsoring open source from the beginning. It's a core value of the company, and now it's more important than ever to support maintainers of the packages we all use and enjoy.
We wrote a little about it here: blog.ag-grid.com/ag-grid-join...
To celebrate companies that pay maintainers, we've created a new website, featuring @danielroe.dev and folks from @ag-grid.bsky.social, @sanity.io, @sentry.io and other great companies.
Let's support the tech we depend on. Here's to the next $7 million! 💃
The Open Source Pledge is a great example of a well run program to help educate companies and nudge them into action. @vlad.website pours so much love into it. We're lucky to count with folks that genuinely care about the long term sustainability story of our shared commons.

After paying maintainers through their Pledge membership, @ag-grid.bsky.social are going above and beyond by hosting some of the most innovative people in Open Source 🔥
Huge thanks to CodeRabbit and Santosh for sponsoring npmx for $1K a month! 🧡🧡🧡
@coderabbitai.bsky.social are the top company by donations per developer in @opensourcepledge.com. OSS sustainability would look very different if every company gave to open source like they do 🙏
A new report from Bloomberg explains why companies should move “from passive consumption to active stewardship” of the Open Source packages they rely on: “you cannot have sustainable code without sustaining the humans who write it (…) if you live in the house, you help fix the roof”.
OSS burnout claims another project. On 2 Apr, an entitled user angrily asked the burned-out maintainer of nvim-treesitter to “go switch to something that doesn't require interacting with people”.
The maintainer replied “OK” — and archived the repo, stopping development of nvim-treesitter.
Are you a company looking to pay maintainers? You could do a lot worse than using funds.ecosyste.ms, which has been independently verified by a new research paper as being effective in supporting maintainers. And every dollar counts towards Pledge membership. 😉
Andrew has been building tools to understand the Open Source ecosystem for over a decade, and a new independent paper confirms the effectiveness of his approach to supporting maintainers. I want to celebrate his work today! 🎉
in times like these, I'm very happy that @sanity.io put some of our @opensourcepledge.com dollars on the good folks at @pnpm.io 🫡
(and we made it our mandated package manager internally)
A very telling chart. Open Source funding has been frozen for the past four years, while everyone's needs for our shared commons infrastructure have continued to grow exponentially. Pay maintainers properly if you want your dependencies to stop feeling like a minefield.
We need everyone to wake up to how fragile our shared commons are. We can't wait until we drown in security incidents and more projects close down, using them as excuses. If you're in a position to help (every company is), check who you depend on and need support (everyone), and fund them.
I had a chat with @vlad.website about the @opensourcepledge.com
Vlad has a ton of insight into how hard it is to just figure out what you're running plus the challenges maintainers have
Vlad has a ton of great ideas how to start tackling some of these incredibly difficult problems
I tip my hat to everyone out there that is doing the thankless, unpaid work to ensure their environments & software stays safe/secure. At @vlt.sh we're giving back (ex. @opensourcepledge.com) & building a package manager that attacks the last mile problem with a zero trust approach.
We're touched by Foxley Talent's dedication to the Open Source ecosystem we all rely on. 🫶
“The last 12 months have been the hardest since I started Foxley Talent (...) [but] for the fourth year running, I have donated $5,000 to the Django Software Foundation (...) it's non negotiable”
It’s official. Mux is part of the @opensourcepledge.com. $77,730 ($2,101/dev) to OSS in 2025, plus stewarding Video.js, the web’s most popular open source player. @mmcc.io wrote about why we signed -- and the dinner conversation that made us act: www.mux.com/blog/mux-joi...

“In Open Source, what looks like fairness often is not. Free for everyone sounds equitable, but the cost does not disappear. It is absorbed by those who can least afford it, while the organizations that benefit most often pay the least.”
Vlad-Stefan Harbuz: "This kind of trust reveals a deep understanding present in npmx’s culture — an understanding that we depend on other people more than we know, and that we can only go so far by ourselves." 🤍💚
Congratulations to the @npmx.dev team on their launch day! 🎉❤️
Here's @vlad.website on how npmx's success shows us why Open Source collaboration itself is so special.
