Catch me online at @viteconf.org later today! I'll be talking about developer burnout and the role AI can play in it 🔥
Around 70% of open source maintainers work alone or in small teams, and most are unpaid. @mirandaheath.website, Director and psychologist at the @stewardshiplab.org on the four drivers of burnout and what AI does to each. @viteconf.org 2026, 15 oct (TODAY) 2pm UTC. Free and online. viteconf.org
Excited to be in Prague for my first #OSSummit! I'll be talking on Burnout in Open Source 11.55 on Friday, come say hi if you're around! 👋 Lots of exciting things in the schedule... bit.ly/3NXx5Zp
So happy to be involved! What a rich picture of what it's like to be a dev in 2026—the good, the bad and the ugly!
With help from the amazing @mirandaheath.website, the 2026 State of Devs survey results are now available! 2026.stateofdevs.com/en-US/ This already took a ton of work, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of what the dataset could teach us.
Super excited to be a speaker at @viteconf.org this year, where I'll be talking about burnout in OSS and why we should care about it 🔥 viteconf.org/tickets/t/YB...
Such an important and multifaceted topic, thanks for the exploring this, was really nice to chat with you about it! Big recommend for anyone feeling a bit off the more they use AI to code!
This is the most important video I've ever made. In this, I explore the negative and positive mental health effects of AI coding, with data and expert commentary. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPUn...

We are proud to have been sponsoring open source from the beginning. It's a core value of the company, and now it's more important than ever to support maintainers of the packages we all use and enjoy. We wrote a little about it here: blog.ag-grid.com/ag-grid-join...
To celebrate companies that pay maintainers, we've created a new website, featuring @danielroe.dev and folks from @ag-grid.bsky.social, @sanity.io, @sentry.io and other great companies. Let's support the tech we depend on. Here's to the next $7 million! 💃
Happy to see OSS maintainer burnout in the public discourse—good job Matthew! 'Heath believes governments should invest more in open source' - that she does 😘
Open source software powers the modern world. But the volunteers who build and maintain it are burning out; a flood of AI "garbage" is making their job unsustainable. www.newscientist.com/article/2527...

> Harbuz says “GitHub will say ‘oh, we realise [AI] agents have been such a problem, we’re gonna maybe do something to fix it’ and it’s like, it’s you, right? You, GitHub, did this”. GitHub did not respond to a request for comment. I said it 🤷

OSS burnout claims another project. On 2 Apr, an entitled user angrily asked the burned-out maintainer of nvim-treesitter to “go switch to something that doesn't require interacting with people”. The maintainer replied “OK” — and archived the repo, stopping development of nvim-treesitter.
'Companies made open source business-critical. For maintainers [work-life] balance is life-critical.' — I love this! OSS creates value for your employer: the Open Source Resistance says, if you have the power, take matters into your own hands and maintain it on the clock! 🏴☠️
Open source maintainers at profitable companies: stop asking permission to fix what your employer already depends on. No paperwork. No programme. No manager’s blessing. Just maintain it on the clock.

The NHS is turning back on its commitment to keep its code open. We're asking them to reconsider. Would you join us?
Some incredible in-depth discussion between @vlad.website and @josh.bressers.name on the importance (and challenges) of paying OSS maintainers in this episode of Open Source Security! (PS thanks for the shout-out ☀️) opensourcesecurity.io/2026/2026-04...
Had fun chatting with @richlitt.bsky.social for the @sustainoss.bsky.social podcast! Listen as we meander from kidney donors to forest floor detritus to death doulas, all while somehow keeping it on the topic of open source sustainability and maintainer burnout 🌱
Miranda (@mirandaheath.website) joins host Richard (@richlitt.bsky.social) to dive into altruism, maintainer motivation, and burnout in open source communities. Listen at 🎙️ podcast.sustainoss.org/285

Absolutely this @sianberry.bsky.social Don’t let the lights go out on our digital infrastructure. We need open source, interoperable systems that are in our control. Tell your MP to support the early day motion ⬇️ action.openrightsgroup.org/protect-brit...
We need a UK Digital Sovereignty Strategy! Our over-reliance on foreign tech giants is a huge risk to our security and resilience when faced with Donald Trump’s ever increasing belligerence. Companies like Palantir have no place in our critical digital infrastructure.
Super interesting research on the effect of different approaches to AI use during learning: worse understanding when relying on Claude to tell us what to do than when making and solving our own mistakes.
Anthropic, makers of Claude, have published a report saying that “AI use impairs conceptual understanding, code reading, and debugging abilities, without delivering significant efficiency gains on average”; for Claude Code specifically, they expect even “more pronounced” impacts on learning
Stoked to learn as a bird fan and ideology researcher that female birdsong is widespread, this was overlooked for centuries as most research happened in the Northern hemisphere + work on female birdsong is more likely to be done by women! Researcher diversity -> richer, less biased bird knowledge! 🦜
Found this helpful! ✨
We've heard people like Starter Packs, so we just begun putting one together for open source organizations. It could be an OSPO like us, a Foundation that supports projects and the ecosystem or accounts for OSS events. Take a look and tell us who else should be there. go.bsky.app/Te7sTt9
I've finished my report on burnout in OSS and how to reduce it! Read more (and find the link to the full report) on the Open Source Pledge blog! Huge thanks to all the OSS devs who shared their perspectives 💜 Let's keep shining a light on this under-recognised issue!
I'm working on a report on the causes of burnout in open source software. If you're a part of the OSS community, I would love to hear your thoughts, either here on Bluesky, or privately via email (see post). Thanks 😊 mirandaheath.website/report-on-bu...
