Today is the release day for DEVOURING FORTUNE, my Dune meets Elden Ring queer, dark science fantasy! Thank you everyone who has supported me through this process, and thank you to everyone who has showed up so far to read the book. You're the best. www.oleandercraw.com/devouring-fo...

No matter how good your work is, putting it on Substack means you are sitting at the Nazi bar, colluding with Nazis. Just stop. Leave. There’s all sorts of help available.

For the love of every god that is, was, or ever will be, GET OFF SUBSTACK.

And day to day, life's a hard job, you get tired, you lose the pattern. You need distance, interval. The way to see how beautiful the earth is, is to see it as the moon. The way to see how beautiful life is, is from the vantage point of death.

Very good post. I think a lot of people who cling rigidly to hard/soft definitions for magic forget how incredibly complex and uncontrollable the natural processes of the real world still are to humans.

Just finished reading this in my inbox a few minutes ago--definitely worth checking out!

FRIENDS: recommend some trans-authored books (including yours!) in the comments! And if you've never read a book by a trans person, browse the comments and you may find your next great read. No time like the present to stick it to the pieces of shit who think we ought neither to be seen or heard

This month's newsletter post is a discussion around the language of magic systems and the cautionary tape I feel is necessary approaching how we talk about it www.oleandercraw.com/monthly-olli...

And for my paid subscribers, this month's flash fiction about feral mermaid clones "The water column rippled, bringing with it a colder current from the far off. Scalefall writhed, tasting the change of the season like crisply brittle darter bones." www.oleandercraw.com/flash-fictio...

Editing tip: set the whole thing on fire

Annihilation always makes Halloween lists, so I thought I'd do a thread of creepy reads. Starting today with a flat-out modern masterpiece, Max Lury's No Ghosts. Thoroughly contemporary and disturbing grounded in deep characterization, and, in part, outdoing Back Rooms while also its own thing. 1

there really is something so heartbreaking seeing huge studios with life long fans closing down while more and more genAI games start to flood the industry. support human creativity. support artists, storytellers, coders, and anyone else who works to bring raw spirit to these things.

I hope workers in other game studios see WoTC unionizing, and see the mass layoffs and BioWare closing and decide it's time to put their foot down. What do we have to lose by unionizing? A job that you're afraid every day you'll be laid off from anyway? UNIONIZE THE GAME INDUSTRY!

There is something so soul crushing about creating art that pushes the needle in the games industry, only to be thanked by using the capital gained from said art to push the ones who created it out of a job.
