This is true, but the trouble is that with kids, days where your responsibilities are asleep is like one per decade

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

I am 100% in favor of people who don't want kids not having kids, but watching your kids play on the beach on a day where all your responsibilities are asleep is a peak human experience of a type you will struggle to get elsewhere.

Good news from Serbia and Brazil. Voting in NZ opens today, lets see if we can continue the streak.

Wow, Stuff really pushing this ‘campaigning with gangs’ stuff, huh? Almost like there might be a bias in the media

Sigh. `Vec` has `retain` and `retain_mut`. `HashMap` only has `retain`, but it is equivalent to `Vec::retain_mut`, not `Vec::retain`.

if you use Haskell, Nix, or Rust it is your professional obligation to ostracize these people in any way shape or form that you have the capacity for. if you work for Anduril you are less than dirt; if you take their money you are a pathetic, disgusting loser.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

To "revel in the death of those who truly deserve it...is normal, good, and aligned with our natural and national order," Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey wrote on X.

Yeah! You know you’re cleaning with the good stuff when your gloves are rotting away half way through

Having gone through Steve’s JJ tutorial, what do I read next? I’m comfy with basic usage, but obviously there’s loads more to learn and I can’t find good resources

OH Functional programming is when Rust people read your code and go "what the fuck (laudatory)". Imperative programming is when Rust people read your code and go "what the fuck (derogatory)"

A lot of you seem to be strangely occupied with EAs or rationalists or anthropic, but not openai or xai or, like, authoritarian developments in various governments. You sure you're directing your disdain at the biggest problems?

Historically, this kind of thing goes badly, eg the Belgian Congo. I am not optimistic here

Chris Wright makes clear there is no timeframe for elections in Venezuela, which is now effectively a colony of the Trump administration

Unfortunately a job offer I had fell through due to head count elimination so I am currently on the market for a new job! If you need someone with 11+ years of Rust, backend, and distributed systems experience I am your guy. Contact Email: michael@ductile.systems. Boosting appreciated!

We rewrote one internal tool to use Rust (instead of TS/Node) as a proof of concept/trial balloon, and yesterday switched over one of our hourly jobs to use it instead of the TS version that it had been using. Over 10× better memory usage and 10–100× improvement in how fast it runs. 🤩

I am being a bit quiet on the socials and blog because I broke my arm and messed up my hand a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully, normal service resumes in a few weeks. I came off my bike pretty badly, but luckily the left arm is the only serious damage - wear your helmet, kids!

Seriously, I'm not usually a big cycling helmet advocate, but I'd probably be dead or in a very bad way if I wasn't wearing mine. Also, gloves are really important too - I can't imagine how messed up my hands would have been without them

Replying to @bretdevereaux.bsky.social

History is endlessly replete with people assuming that the big affairs of state will remain forever far away right up until those huge forces roar through their town or village, burning and killing. Then suddenly it matters quite a lot. As a pundit or journalist it is *your job* to remind them!

NZ health service is absolutely at breaking point. It’s already affecting thousands of people’s quality of life. If the government doesn’t change this year, it will get worse. Many will die, many more will have their lives ruined.

'Collapse' is deeply bad when clinicians say it. 494 patients in 24 hours at Middlemore, when 280 was the record last winter.

Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank diverted a spring that was a lifeline for the Palestinian village of Fasayil, cutting irrigation pipes in June and converting it into a tourist attraction, leaving nearby farms barren.

Does anyone know why ripgrep is soooooo much slower on macOS than Linux these days? On the left is my AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS laptop and on the right is my M2 mac mini. Both searching the same revision of Chromium and both are hot in the OS page cache.

On one hand, this (the post and the thread) is absolutely true and valid. On the other, 'letting more people in' is a strategy of the management class for lowering wages. That and the equivalent but with AI is what has made me a lot colder on "we need to let more people in".

Cat Hicks@grimalkina.bsky.social

If a few rich assholes saying shit you don't like about coding is all it took to flip you out of Obama era progress on "we need to let more people in" and into this era's "fuck you for not being in" then you basically never internalized the evidence here.

There's exactly one reason that doctors and lawyers are well-paid professions, and it is because they have been particular good at "fuck you for not being in" (which I'm not saying is a good thing objectively or for society, or even for doctors and lawyers entirely, but it is why they're well-paid)

I definitely know some Auckland based nerds who might be interested in this...

This isn't the kind of job listing you see very often! 👀 Our friends at Auckland Museum are looking for a Wikimedian in Residence to join the team! Get more information and apply via Seek: nz.seek.com/job/93393322

Can anyone recommend good non-beginner tutorials for using LLMs for SWE? I'm pretty comfortable so well past the beginner tutorials, but feel like I'm a long way from being an expert user.

Uncomfortably close to present-day Queenstown, tbh.

I still think the best fictional depiction of an apocalyptic New Zealand is Kirsten McDougall's She's a Killer. All the world's ultra-rich flee here and reshape it into a billionaire's paradise that's utterly miserable for everybody else.
