Don't believe the hype. Anthropic's IPO filings show it's not in good shape. You just have to dig a little deeper.

Matt Scherer@matthewus.bsky.social

Except, (1) the only reason they are cash-flow positive is that they are getting discounts on virtually all inputs from their Big Tech investors; (2) their revenues stopped growing in Q3; and (3) they have taken on $800B+ in future contractual commitments (50x their now-stagnant operating revenue).

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

This is how the Trump administration ended dozens of disinformation and propaganda experts’ careers in government. With an awkward, almost gleeful speech from known white supremacist and conspiracy theorist Darren Beattie. Listen to the rest on DISARMED: www.thewayfinder.net/p/is-the-us-...

Yep. Technofascism.

News just broke that Elon Musk made a $1 billion investment in the Ellison family's Skydance, which owns CBS and CNN. Anoher step toward right-wing "media capture," as I wrote about recently in my Stop the Presses newsletter.

The force behind data center, ICE abductions, state attacks on marginalized people, and gutting government services has a name: technofascism. Americans get this in a way that many elites still refuse to comprehend. Keep pushing.

Big Tech - which is now Big AI - is a driving force behind the rise of technofascism. Sustainable democratic renewal requires dismantling its power, its business model and its structural control over the information environment. It’s time to think big, folks. Very big. bsky.app/profile/libe...

"These products hurt people, especially young people. As a result, Meta and the attorneys general reached an $18 billion public settlement. … The problem with the settlement is that its compliance requirements—the changes that the settlement requires Meta to make—suck."

we're going to need a long-term plan, with broad political appeal, for ending impunity & holding the trump administration accountable for its crimes, malfeasance & cruelties. not 'tit-for-tat' but an american version of transitional justice. my take in @slate.com 👇

In light of some (valid!) counterpoints I got on this post, I want to complicate my point a bit. 1) I do think that at least some Big Tech firms are trying to hedge their midterm bits by softening the edges of their technofascism ahead of courting a possible new congressional majority

3) more will become clear in due course, esp once we learn what Kaplan will be doing next beyond spending time with his family. (Not for nothing, his plans seem to include non-consensual time with his adult kid 😬)

4) Regardless, the core point is: Meta and its leaders are committed to technofascism. They may try to mollify centrist Dems with crocodile tears, or they may not even bother out of overconfidence in their own power. Either way, civil society must keep up the drumbeat of resistance against Big Tech

2) at the same time, Casey Newton has a point here: Kaplan has succeeded in making Meta into an arm of MAGA, and there’s no reason to think anyone at the company is rethinking its commitment to technofascism. His rumored replacement by Dina Powell McCormick suggests a doubling down on technofascism

“We have seen the tech companies that, back in 2019, 2020, wanted us to see them as climate leaders, completely throw their targets out the window in order to pursue generative AI and this data center buildout.” Some data centers have even built “on-site gas plants.”

The producer of a radio show I went on this morning said the host wanted to talk about Ilhan Omar, so I went back and listened to a bunch of the press coverage from last week to refresh my memory on the details. And I realized that the US media still doesn’t know how to talk about authoritarianism.
