@chiraagbains.bsky.social: “The next admin will not have the luxury of rebuilding the old enforcement system…But an admin that sets clear priorities in the public interest…demands strong remedies…explains its work in resonant plain language can accomplish a great deal even in these circumstances.”

Trump weaponized enforcement against his enemies and gutted the agencies that protect working people. The next president should go big on enforcement in civil rights, labor, consumer protection, and antitrust to take on those who cheat and exploit the public. New from me at @justsecurity.org

For more than a decade, it has felt to defenders of free society that we are peddling fruitlessly against the powerful current of authoritarianism. That current grew firmer, more dominant, as it swept in new nations from the shores of democracy and carried the world further toward illiberal abyss.

Allow them to embolden our visions for a more just tomorrow and to fortify us against the forces of illiberalism which will only grow less forgiving and more aggressive in the coming days.

But the movements in Brazil and Serbia, Hungary and India, and the millions of names and faces that alchemize into a new current of democracy remind us of the most important lesson for our moment: nothing, nothing, nothing is inevitable.

1) The students who risked their futures and took to the streets; 2) the politicians who focused the public on corruption; and 3) the non-traditional coalitions that mobilized not around fine-grained policy provisions, but around the rejection of a common enemy.

There are more factors -- this is complicated. The road will not a be a straight line. And yet global dissidents and democracy activists often share the same advice about moments like this: savor the wins.

The global democracy movement will be administered a new battery of tests in the coming days, first in Israel and then in the United States. We will see just how healthy our movement is.

But if historians eventually look back at 2026 as the year the fever broke -- the moment we began to weaken the arrayed forces of illiberal political power, Big Tech, corporate media consolidation, and extreme wealth -- it will be in part due to three tactical factors:

India’s increasingly illiberal government was brought to its knees for the first time in recent memory -- and forced to change course on major policy -- in a wave of youth protests.

And tonight, voters in both Brazil and Serbia decisively rejected members of that global right-wing nationalist cabal -- “Greater MAGA” as Josh Marshall calls it -- as well as their dark visions for society.

Many concluded, after 2024, as America selected a president who campaigned on a pledge to dismantle both domestic checks and balances and the postwar democratic order, that we were simply Victims of Events -- that history had caught up with us and this was our lot.

But it was not our lot. One by one, democratic antibodies have attacked the virus of authoritarianism. Our societies have fought back. People have fought back. Hungary evicted its “strongman” after sixteen years, delivering an electoral victory so decisive that he had no choice but to walk away.

November could mark the beginning of a reversal of America's authoritarian slide. We've seen it happen in other countries. The lessons are there for us.

the love and the support for the handbasket this week has lifted me up so much, but today something triggered me and i was reminded i’m still working with a broken heart. it’s very hard to balance the satisfaction of being back in the work game while still feeling really sad.

The best context for understanding isn’t not the American legal system. We are talking about something else here. The comparisons are authoritarian countries. The intellectual and political lineage is Soviet thuggery: “Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime.”

It seems almost trite to still be making this point in Oct 2026. But each new breakthrough re-triggers this cycle of bewilderment and disorientation. A crucial first step in getting off this path is using the words, phrases, frameworks, and historical analogues that help people see what’s happening.

The people many of these shows had on were legal experts, law professor types, who could thoroughly discuss individual charges, precedent, procedure, and even point out that all this is “highly unusual,” etc. But they could not say—this is what happens in other countries.

For one possible outcome of the coming years in the US, look to Brazil where Bolsonaro’s (third) wife is about to be a senator, his (minor figure) son is about to be a congressman, and his (major figure) son may well be president. Only part less likely here is that the father is under house arrest.

It’s a campaign of retribution, built on promises of justice for daddy. Our times are jumbled, but the dynamics and characters have remarkable overlap.
