Hegseth: "It's worth saying again so the fake news understands it. We are no longer the woke department or the weak department. Simple translation of that -- no fatties no trannies no beardos no weirdos no wimps no radicals. Just warriors."

Look, let's clear this up. LLMs can't think or understand because those are evolved capabilities of embodied living organisms embedded in the physical and social world and LLMs aren't that. Don't make it harder than it is.

People who have a hundred thousand followers on here really owe it to themselves and the community to resist getting baited by 139-follower randos. Not only is it super tacky, but 9 times out 10 it results in the smaller account getting dogpiled. Just bad all around. Block and move on!

Yes AND elected Democrats need to think deeply about how to create and sustain legitimacy around these investigations in ways that don’t result in 5-7 year timelines to obtain justice for crimes we all saw take place in real time

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

This is correct, but also another reason why Democrats have to lean into accountability and oversight as hard as possible when they retake Congress. It's not just about punishing criminals. It's about making it clear to the country the depth of the damage done to ready them for the repairs.

We’ve all been told repeatedly that on a total simpleton could believe Jack Smith’s investigation could have moved any faster and if that’s the playbook post Trump 2, these guys will never be held to account.

That Hum record still rules, if we’re being completely honest with ourselves

the only chart I wanna see people talk about on Bluesky is the Billboard Modern Rock chart from 31 years ago today — August 26, 1995

Will goes on to note NJ’s highly suburban nature and I just think it’s worth pointing out that this seemingly objective fact is actually a perception born of political economic and geographic choices made at the state and local level

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Demographically, the state most reflective of America as a whole is probably New Jersey

There is imho an excellent case to be made for city-county consolidation in Hudson and (especially) Essex counties that would give NJ two cities in the Denver/Nashville range population wise and give the lie to a lot of the “it’s a state of suburbs!” talk

It is summer 2022. A man walks into a London antiques shop. Picking up an old lamp, he polishes it with his sleeve. A genie appears. "What is your wish, master?" "I wish Arsenal had a chance to win the title every season!" the man exclaims. "A chance, you say?" the genie replies

Sup chat this is Slouching Towards Bethlehem with your boy The Rough Beast, and it looks like today’s stream could be a big one, as some of you might’ve already seen there are rumors going around social media that the hour has come round at last, so we’re gonna get right into it

Something like 1 in 2,000 Americans belongs to a Unitarian Universalist congregation. Something like 1 in 6 clergy assembled in Minnesota today is a Unitarian Universalist minister.

It’s a lot more fun to talk about the Cure than Morton Downey Jr., is partially what’s going on imho

As a child of the 80s, this applies both culturally and aesthetically. Remembrances make the 80s look like a Duran Duran video. In reality everything was dark and largely brown. Also: it was really the 1970s until about 1984 or so, but that's another conversation. bsky.app/profile/seey...

I’ll die mad at Chris Christie for canceling the ARC tunnel project for the sole purpose of giving Obama the finger. This “tunnels are woke” bullshit and so much other nonsense is the direct result, and meanwhile Jersey commuters will be screwed for a generation.

It was extremely stupid (see freedom fries) but the current discourse tends to way overplay the idea that very few people knew the truth or saw what was happening at the time. Was there elite consensus? Yes. Did opponents get called names? Yes. Despite that, were there massive protests? Also yes.

I was too young to be ware of the Iraq invasion debate but was it this degree of stupid? It can't have been this stupid.

if the press were a cat, trump’s mental fitness would be the toy and biden’s mental fitness would be the box the toy came in

For the most part, leading Democrats are ducking what is fast becoming the first real litmus test of the 2028 campaign: former President Biden's mental acuity.

We love to talk about dystopias like 1984 and Brave New World but we do not talk enough about about Ender's Game, a book in which the locus of power exists on message boards and two children take over the entire world by Posting

I’m sorry, what????

He’s the co-host of a self-described “patriotic podcast” that has done one episode on British colonialism in India and one on British colonialism in the Caribbean, out of hundreds. As an American I’m not familiar with him as a media personality but I’m also not surprised he’s this way.

As an aside, i know there will be folks who say “do you really expect a British podcast with a largely British audience to talk down Britain?”. But history is an insult only to those who won’t face it.

If a US-based history podcast was hundreds of episodes in and had hardly touched on Latin America, let alone American military and intelligence intervention therein, it would raise the exact same questions imho.

I would read the heck out of a book analyzing how selling out went from the worst thing you could possibly do to seemingly everyone’s highest aspiration.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

I know I lost this battle long ago, but ... the sight of Harrison Ford exploiting martial imagery in order to sell Jeeps for some global megacorp just makes me want to vomit. Remember in the 90s, how there was cultural pressure not to sell out? I think I'm the only one who took that seriously!

if we’re going to abandon reason, embrace superstition, and regress as a society, we should at least bring back tunics, houppelandes, and elaborate hats. we do not need to look this boring while we’re at it

It is my pet theory that waking up and reading "The Bad Report," listening to "HorribleCast: A Podcast About Bad Things" and checking the social media accounts for everyone at "Awful News Inc" may perhaps have some negative psychological impacts over the long term.
