Kiah Stokes has three 3pters, half the Valkyries’ total. Along with her record-setting block total in the Finals, should the Valks win the championship, this feels like the game Stokes locked up MVP.

Kerith Burke@kerithburke.bsky.social

Kiah Stokes has the most made threes in the game for the Valks! 2-3 on a night where the Valks are currently shooting 5-20 from distance.

I feel like those early 2010s Finals played on college courts were disrespectful and embarrassing. Winning a title in the middle of a workday and being shooed off the court for one of a million regular season MenBA games is beyond. Just the maximum embarrassment possible.

Making waterway networks from OSM data is one of the more fun recent features in underfoot.rocks. The National Hydrography Dataset is great, but it doesn't cover culverted creeks very well, and they're some of the more interesting urban hydrological features.

@openstreetmap.bsky.social waterway data for certain packs (currently just the SF Bay Area). More complete than the NHD for culverted urban creeks (though probably less complete in more data-sparse areas). Here's a trace from Lake Temescal to the Bay in Oakland, CA, which is mostly underground.

So a mallet really is a little mall

Orin Kerr@orinkerr.bsky.social

So you go from the 1500s Italian game "mallet ball," or pallamaglio, to the French "pallemaille," to the English name "pall-mall," to an elongated area where you would play pall mall being called a "mall," to a walking area being called a mall, to an indoor shopping area being called a mall.

Might well go, though it overlaps Q1 of Dream/Valks

Good for Nakase to switch up the starting line-up for a faster start and cushion to withstand the Dream’s runs. Series tied 2-2.

What a gut-check and confirmation of the Valkyries' entire belief system. Down 2-1 in the WNBA Finals on the road, having lost 2 straight, they smash through the very skittery Dream to even up the series, coming back to Chase for Game 5 on Monday. Nothing fancy. Just force.

Excellent, applies to CA too: “Deregulatory efforts, the way that the UK does them, tend to erode the goodwill and consent of the public, leading to a political reaction which causes them to be rolled back or qualified, and this in turn tends to erode the goodwill and confidence of the developers”

Because four of the Justices have book contracts with a party's corporate parent, the Supreme Court LACKS A QUORUM to hear BMG v. Vetter, and one of the worst copyright decisions in recent memory is affirmed by default. It's just one bad look after another. www.supremecourt.gov/docket/docke...

Someone smashed up the green park bench I put out, so that’s bringing me down a bit tonight. I’m going to need to salvage / collect it so it’s not unsafe for anyone like the one it replaced. Happily the two b-ball court benches I set out a year+ ago are still going strong.

Speaking as somebody who used to recoil at court-packing suggestions, the reason these objections sound 10 years out of date is that the status quo does not seem distinguishable from a worst-case "race to the bottom". Recent SCOTUS rulings are already absurdly partisan.

Per California state law, car drivers are banned from using bus lanes but bike riders are not. There is also a right-side bicycling law. This means if there is a right side bus lane but no bike lane, bike riders are actually required to use the bus lane, not only allowed.

We are in a multistory AirBnB whose entire building footprint is 12x12 feet. It’s charming and you really have to plan ahead as you go from level to level on the spiral staircase. The top floor bedroom has a tall ceiling (photo) and is basically a cube.
