Not now contagious Mink

ProPublica@propublica.org

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.

Loved this from Geoffrey Hinton “godfather of AI”, this afternoon, on the subject of humans & AI: “We’re behaving like we just got a very cute baby tiger as a pet. When it grows up, it can easily kill you if it wants to. There are only two options: kill it or make sure it never wants to”.

In the long term this is way more destructive than Jackdaw, because it actively slows down electrification and weaning households off residual LNG consumption.

We literally have the largest bike-touring event in the world which has been an annual summer state tradition for FIFTY YEARS. There's a giant exhibit in the state historical museum about it. This is comical.

Enforcement of the “red tape” would actually help legitimate businesses

Jim Waterson@jim.londoncentric.media

As someone who runs a small business and for some reason pays my taxes…. Today’s “red tape” cut to company paperwork makes no real difference to me or my ability/desire to expand. As someone who investigates small business high street tax evasion… great news for candy stores and scam dropshippers!

And it is indeed now publication day. I’m sure there are vast stacks to be found in “every good bookstore”. Also coming out in German, Italian and Dutch editions this week.

hikikomorphism@hikikomorphism.bsky.social

If you can substitute "hungry ghost trapped in a jar" for "AI" in a sentence it's probably a valid use case for LLMs. Take "I have a bunch of hungry ghosts in jars, they mainly write SQL queries for me". Sure. Reasonable use case. "My girlfriend is a hungry ghost I trapped in a jar"? No. Deranged.

People who complain that Burnham is "wasting his time" on things that are very easy and low-cost for the government but make a significant difference to people's everyday lives don't understand politics imo. If this was all he was thinking about as prime minister, sure, I would worry, but it's not

Sure, parking companies have been a source of frustration to drivers, adding an unpredictable financial risk to every journey taken by car, but AIUI there’s downsides to them as well

People will mock this as small beer politics but predatory behaviour by parking companies has been a major source of frustration and financial cost for millions, and for many years.

🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced changes to car parking fines - Drivers will have a 5-minute grace period to decide whether to park and 10 minutes to leave after a parking session ends - A £20 maximum charge on appeal for minor mistakes, such as entering the wrong number plate

Yay parking reform. Please add: - single government app all private cos must use if they want to enforce through courts. - hard limit on initial penalty, ie £40 or a 2 or 3 times multiple of 24 hours parking cost at site.

- Recoverable costs of going to county courts fixed at say £200 per dispute? paid by losing party to winner, to introduce jeopardy for parking companies.

The real game changer would be to require parking companies that use an app and ANPR to offer app users the chance to cure parking issues within say a week. You overstayed by five minutes - please pay the additional £1.30 before x date to avoid a fine. This would have to be opt-in, for privacy

Really fascinating case of a thoroughly orphaned cultural object. What living person is Ali G "satirising" in 2026? Like, Harry Enfield didn't scrap Loadsamoney due to political correctness, it's cos the Thatcherist parvenu (and the anxiety its emergence triggered within society) no longer exists.
