A perennial challenge for folks coming to government through programs like USDS or 18F was feeling like they were able to really understand and make a dent on hard problems in a 2- or 4-year term. So obviously the new DOGE thinks you can do it in 6 months. forge.ndstudio.gov

I just started @benzevgreen.bsky.social’s book after listening to this, and it’s really striking to me how much of it reflects the parallel evolution of what Ben calls algorithmic realism and user-centered design in civic tech. There’s a lot these methodologies can learn from each other.
On the Tech Policy Press podcast, editor Justin Hendrix talks with Ben Green @benzevgreen.bsky.social of the University of Michigan, about his new book, “Algorithmic Realism: Data Science Practices to Promote Social Justice,” from MIT Press @mitpress.bsky.social Listen here: buff.ly/Y6i4AvL

New from me: Michael Lewis provides a timely reminder that even the heroic federal employees who tried to block DOGE grifters could only do so much. If DOGE could not be stopped at the time, accountability must be on the agenda for the future. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/blockers-a...

New from me: Trump, his Cabinet, white nationalist Joe Gebbia and Big Balls came together for a special event: to unveil America.gov. What the site offers - a chatbot - and what it promises are two very different things, with lots of hard work ahead. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/americagov...
A lot of the difficulties that rule specifically addresses are related to remediating documents (like PDF/Word docs) rather than websites or apps but all of the reasoning applies to all digital media. And here's a link to the rule if you want to check that. www.federalregister.gov/documents/20...
Nicolas Steenhout has done a great analysis of *why* it's a pipe dream www.linkedin.com/pulse/automa.... The analysis is multifaceted (and correct, imo) but boils down to the ineradicable role of human experience & judgment in evaluating accessibility in context.
In the early days of the new prompt engineer's work on USWDS, he announced an intent to fully automate accessibility testing. The community rightly pushed back on this, and the announcement was tweaked in response bsky.app/profile/matt...
They've already (sort of?) walked back the idea of automating all of their accessibility testing. I don't think this is a meaningful change but maybe it indicates that they're paying attention to criticism.
The link in that discussion post is to a roadmap issue, which cashes out in more detail what this automation entails. Despite the changes to the discussion post, this issue still reads to me like the desired end state is total automation. github.com/orgs/uswds/p...
Bad post about a good article. But there’s one huge contrast it overlooks between DOGE and the civic tech model it tried to kill: DOGE ignored agency expertise, while civic tech tried to enhance and enable it. It‘s an important distinction and shows what some of the challenges ahead will be.
DOGE overhauled the federal workforce and slashed government spending — moves that inspired nationwide protests and lawsuits. The backlash has given Democrats nationally an opportunity to reclaim the government efficiency mantle.
Wake up, babe. New ibiblio dropped (i dont have anything to do with it, i just love it) www.ibiblio.org

I'm not a designer. I'm a developer. The USWDS documentation approach to explaining not just how to use components but when and why is a major asset to me. And it reminds me to consider things I might not have otherwise.
I think there's a decent chance the new AI-pilled USWDS is going to be built on shadcn, and I don't think it's a good fit. I wrote a very little bit about why I think that but I could write a hell of a lot more. matthenry.fyi/posts/a-syst...

Wrote about the decline and fall of SCOTUSblog, which used to be the single best resource for Supreme Court stuff, and (thanks to some intervening crimes committed by its co-founder) is now a weird platform for conservative pundits to talk about what a good job the conservative justices are doing

My first read is that like many other NDS websites the real functionality is ‘coming soon’ - I tested a VA disability claim and it directs me to the VA site. It claims to be able to do that in 2027 but that’s a significantly heavier lift than building an LLM wrapper.
President Trump unveils America.gov, an AI-powered "plan that sits in the palm of your hand" to replace thousands of "terrible government websites."

Several civic technologists, civil servants, and concerned citizens signed on to an open letter to GSA leadership and members of congress asking them to protect USWDS as a piece of critical digital infrastructure. I'm proud to be one of them. fedscoop.com/websites-jeo...
