Remember when you could just go to a website without having to sit through a not-a-bot verification page first? Techbros ruin everything.

My neighbor is a transgender witch and now I need to remember to thank them for their outsized role in swinging the national mood so hard against Trump. I also need to compliment the gourds in their garden this year, they're impressive. www.lgbtqnation.com/2026/10/ted-...

lgbtqnation.comTed Cruz rants about "transgender witches" in bizarre plea for "ordinary Americans" to vote - LGBTQ Nation"They can’t run on the economy, the deficit or no new wars. All they have left is transgender witches."

Should I update my profile picture? I think my current one more accurately portrays me, but this one is pretty cute, and on the internet, nobody can tell you're a dog anyway.

We are continuing our nationwide search for early-career meteorologists with a new round of hiring! We’ve streamlined our USAJobs announcements and have new options for applicants to select location preferences.

I check the news 2-3 times a day just in case it has happened yet, which is wasteful because I imagine my phone will blow up with texts within seconds of the news escaping containment. But still I check. Honestly I'd love to be the one who delivers the news to someone else. Sharing joy is wonderful!

My credit card company says that some of my purchases are eligible for "pay over time," and is that not true of every credit card purchase? Is that not half the point of credit cards? (Instead of interest payments, they charge a monthly fee which comes out to about 7.5% of the purchase.)

Headline about Democratic candidates wringing their hands about trans-rights messaging, believing that's why they lost 2024. Listen here, you dipshits. Trans rights are non-negotiable. If you're not willing to defend transgender Americans, you will not get my vote.

So like, even if you are a monster who doesn't care about the rights of trans people, at least support trans rights out of your own selfish sense of preservation. Jesus. This isn't hard.

"oooOOooh, but 2024!" Okay, so let's assume Democrats lost in 2024 because of trans rights debates. What happened? Well, we ceded trans rights and now everyone's rights have been eroded. We only have to look backwards TWO YEARS to see that line of reasoning is stupid.

This is table stakes, as far as I'm concerned. And it's so plainly obvious that people have been saying it forever: injustice against one is injustice against all. If we allow any of us to be oppressed, we're holding the door open for all of us to be oppressed.

My first reaction to hearing about Meta Muse was "abso-fucking-lutely not," and the horror stories come as no surprise. But the manufactured complexity of digital tech and the heroism of technologists led us here. Most people don't know how their computers work.

I don't know how the not-math parts of us work, and neither does anyone else. Where does intuition come from? We don't know. What is a gut feeling? Don't know! If we don't know how we make decisions, how on earth can we expect machines to do it? Computers can only do what we tell them to do.

And that's because we have discouraged them and hidden the knowledge. Now they're letting the computer act on their behalf without understanding that the computer is just... guessing. It is incapable of "knowing" anything. It's just doing math. You, a human, cannot be replicated with just math.

I keep having dreams that I get to be a guest in some fashion on Top Chef and enjoy the contestants' food. Maybe it's a premonition, and that'd be sweet.

i think cox should spend less time weeping about polarization and more time working to convince his co-partisans not to abandon pluralism and liberal democracy

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has emerged as a prominent voice calling on Americans to step back from the political hostility gripping the country. The Republican governor is expanding on that message in a new book. https://to.pbs.org/3VmTJnx

Does anyone have recommendations for a music streaming service that does a good job of creating endless playlists of similar music? Something like Pandora that lets you tweak the playlist over time, but not Pandora because it gets stuck in loops. Not Apple Music and not Spotify.

Basically I am lazy and don't want to have to curate playlists. They don't really match the way I think about music, either. I just want a continuous stream of music that is a similar sound and vibe, pretty much always. My only playlists are hundreds of song that collectively meet that criteria. 😛

I'm not a designer. I'm a developer. The USWDS documentation approach to explaining not just how to use components but when and why is a major asset to me. And it reminds me to consider things I might not have otherwise.

I think there's a decent chance the new AI-pilled USWDS is going to be built on shadcn, and I don't think it's a good fit. I wrote a very little bit about why I think that but I could write a hell of a lot more. matthenry.fyi/posts/a-syst...

I love when FedEx says I should expect my package today but it started out this morning in a warehouse 1,200 miles away. Like gurl, c'mon. Get real. That's almost as bad as Windows telling you how long a file copy is going to take.

12 minutes remaining... 2 seconds remaining... 1 week remaining... 14 minutes remaining... November remaining... Done! Oops no wait 3 more minutes...

So on the one hand, this looks like someone having harmless fun. Just an Easter egg, right? On the other hand, the government shouldn't do this. It erodes trust. It is unexpected and inexplicable and confusing. This is not how you interact with the public.

DO NOT ASK THE AMERICA.GOV AI TO PLAY MINECRAFT

After seeing this, I contacted 1Password support and got a variation of "support the art, not the artist," which is a tacit endorsement of the artist. That is not acceptable to me. Turns out, Bitwarden is a very fine replacement, and today I canceled my 1Password subscription after 19 years.

Several civic technologists, civil servants, and concerned citizens signed on to an open letter to GSA leadership and members of congress asking them to protect USWDS as a piece of critical digital infrastructure. I'm proud to be one of them. fedscoop.com/websites-jeo...

And frankly I don't want faith organizations managing large-scale community health. Let them manage the health of their church communities, yes! And they should participate in broader community health because they exist in it! But I don't want their religion to determine what constitutes "healthy."
