I'm sad anytime ground starts to get ceded because enough widdle guys who are just twying to make it in this big world (πŸ₯Ί) can't have a backbone. it's "a little vibecoding is okay" today and then "it's just background assets" then "what are they supposed to model all the characters by hand?"

apologies to anyone who doesn't want to read my AI rants, but Next Fest has once again Activated me

keep seeing this same blurb in every AI disclosure: "Every piece of content that makes it into the game is reviewed, curated, and touched by human designers" utterly meaningless statement. same as "I only copy/paste the images from Google image search that I personally like" 0% authorship

You know that distinctive malaise you've been feeling from AI lately? Not the crushing doubt about the future, but the low-level dejection where seeing cool stuff online doesn't hit anymore? I figured it out. It's 'cause the Romantic Era of Making Stuff is ending.

We grew up during the digital Age of Heroes. Every cool tech demo, game, image, etc. you saw had a heroic narrative of human effort behind it. Participating in this exchange made you part of the story, and there was glory (and sometimes even a modest living) to be won in honing your craft.

Now, nothing can be appreciated at face value. Everything you see is a potentially a con. The people using AI are short-circuiting the entire labor dynamic that allows this ecosystem to exist in the first place, yet foolishly believe they're entitled to the same rewards. End of an era πŸ˜”

Is code art? Maybe in the broadest sense, but I view it more as craft; something between industrial design and carpentry. "Implausible", you say. "Individual machine instructions are anonymous, interchangeable." But then so are pixels in a pixel art image, and those machine instructions pile up...

...at some point (when exactly is a negotiation between you and society), all of these little instructions and design decisions come together to describe a unique, *authored* work: a new piece of software. Your code is no more or less instrumental than materials in carpentry.

But there's a *difference in kind* between using pre-cut lumber and supervising an Ikea factory. So do you wanna be a carpenter, or a factory foreman? How many foremen do they need at an autonomous factory anyway? (Yes I'm talking about AI code. I am begging you to have some self respect.)

you know your game is balanced if and only if two different people look at the same thing and one says "I don't think this is good" while the other goes "bro this is so cracked!"

the issue has and will always be the total number of games; everything else predictably falls out of that no judgement really, just acknowledging that it sucks how hard everything is you may as well get in now though 'cause it's not gonna get any easier

SLAUGHTER VOID IS LIVE, GO GET BARBARIC WITH IT This started as a "for fun" project that got out of control. Now we get to bundle with Conquest Dark, Bleak Sword, and Elderborn. If you love Sword and Sorcery or retro fantasy, hop in. Reviews help us a ton! #indiedev #indiegame s.team/a/3333980

I just can't get over the theft. More engineers need to grow a spine. You're consuming the mechanically-separated remains of your own career prospects, sold back to you as an anonymous pink slurry. You're clapping the backs of the thieves as they walk out of your apartment with all your shit.

ANY gen ai usage is unacceptable. Seeing people say "oh but if it's just for coding"... No, programming with the environment destroying slop machine is also unacceptable. No one needs this shit
