Honouring the legacy of Margaret Hamilton, the pioneer who coined the term “software engineering.” Her brilliant priority-driven software helped keep the Apollo 11 computer running through critical overloads during its final descent, helping land humanity safely on the Moon. RIP.

the entire story of Theranos is a cautionary tale of Gall's Law "A complex system that works has evolved from a simple system that worked. A complex system built from scratch won’t work." they leaped to the end, failing to solve any of the intermediate gnarly problems, and it was impossible

This was one of my main takeaways from Carreyrou's book; she did not have an exit plan from Theranos or any idea what to do when it fell apart because she had convinced herself that willpower and intention were the only things that actually mattered.

Why keeping a "work diary" is helpful for software engineers: Writing down what you do, useful commands/info, and ongoing investigations expands your memory. This is critical in software engineering since there's so much to remember. Here are a 4 use cases for this diary:

Pancreatic cancer is so tough. But in an early trial, 7 of 8 patients (87.5%) who responded to a personalized mRNA vaccine + immunotherapy are still alive 6 years after surgery. It's designed to train the immune system to fight remaining cells. Promising, and worth attention.

Replying to @nutty.land

The AI craze dies when it's the new normal. Once this stuff works, and gains broad adoption, people eventually move on to the next big thing, and repeat the process.

"If these tools are so good, where's all the magic software?" I see more bugs now, in software that was rock solid before. The uncomfortable question: when does that hit something load-bearing? Has it already?

"We're accumulating code faster than we're accumulating trust." Code you can fix. Trust evaporates in an instant and doesn't come back. XP was a trust factory. Every practice that builds it makes you trustworthy. Vibe coding removes those moments: newsletter.kentbeck.com/p/trust-fact...
