Lot of folks (self included) expressing despair that despite aggressive prosecuting fascists ("doing everything right") Brazil was still going to get Bolsonaro-ed and the fact this guy gtfo-ed as quickly as he did should be a big signal for the AOC DOJ to go *hard* in 2029.

Aw nuts *BOLSONARO EN ROUTE TO THE US, FOLHA REPORTS CITING ALLIES

when I first got to startup land, I'd read Ray Kurzweil on the bus, trying to figure out what the whole… deal was, in Silicon Valley and Kurzweil described this notion: that reality was a stack of information processing mechanisms operating at different speeds and it was *accelerating*

I mean, sometimes you really do get a paradigm shift sometimes every industry gets a reboot on new premises

Kurzweil's predictive record is imperfect and I'd hardly co-sign his entire deal (I always joke about the vitamins) yet, as a mechanism for reasoning about the future, this idea of accelerating returns has been a helpful flashlight in the dark.

sometimes you really do get a paradigm shift—a reset in the economics, leverage, and assumptions that underpin our productive reality and just because a paradigm shift just happened, doesn't mean another one is unlikely at this point. they can stack recursively

so you had biology, which was sluggish, evolution operating on the scale of billions of years that gave rise to cognition, which was faster, but bound by biology. then you get information processors, from the printing press to the difference engine to the Apple II, faster "accelerating returns"

Kurzweil's argument is that each stack in the information processing regime feeds back on your ability to process information and we can see this in computing specifically: computers are made by computers. and as computers improve, the next generation of computers builds on those improvements

Funny how having an inherent respect for human behavior can protect you from this. Not that I agree with all human behavior but that I think it generally has a point to it and "the whole world is stupider than me" is a bad distortion on analysis

smoked haters got absolutely smoked on the facts because the entire movement against AI power is built on fruit of a poisoned tree opposing the growing and dangerous power of AI (and its purveyors) requires reckoning with the reality of how it works, not plugging your ears pretending it doesn't

Example: to gamble in CA you *must* have information XYZ about an end-user. to do so in NY you are *prohibited* from retaining that. so you need legally separate entities, so you need physically seperate information storage, you need two seperate legal teams (who must be in CA/NY, of course)

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

and my hot take is that people react strongly to ai because they refuse to admit the technology they already use is made off a mountain of unimaginable exploitation and harm (the acceptable kind, i suppose)

dame@dame.is

my nuclear-grade AI hot take that’s sure to get me cancelled until kingdom come is that refusing to use AI at all is rapidly becoming an extremely privileged lifestyle choice that feels social justice-y while actually being the complete opposite

this is just further proof that the guiding light of Matt's politics is getting negatively polarized by people he sees on social media

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

I see autistic masking discourse going around again. Neurotypical social norms *are* understandable. Acting neurotypical is doable if high effort (my mom is like this). You can get a long way by being a kind of weird that doesn't rub people the wrong way, which is much easier. But it hinges on this:

Neurotypical social norms are not actually mostly arbitrary bullshit! The specific mechanics can be silly for the same reason the vagus nerve is silly, evolution over time, but they're mostly active "I am mindful that you are another person with feelings and I am not treading on them" signalling.
