Our new paper: Ouros, our processor for lazy functional languages. Its pipeline hides latency to overcome inherent sequentiality of graph reduction, through dataflow-driven execution and automatic multi-threading. It's up to 118% faster than our earlier KappaMutor processor. doi.org/10.1109/ASAP...

Even without the random moving (was offered a PostDoc in my hometown that I wanted to move back to after my PhD), I still left academia. Now I have stable working hours, actual holiday, twice the pay and I don't have to deal with the song and dance of where to publish with whom for max prestige.

I guess I'm doing PhD discourse: I left academia because I realized that *IF* I was extremely lucky, it would mean: Moving to a random town. Being stuck there for the rest of my life. Being paid like a junior engineer. I loved my field, but enough to drag my family to Stillwater Oklahoma? No.

Replying to @doscienceto.it

Haskell can call into C code without blocking main thread (meaning that the C FFI plays nice with green threads because it can be preempted) and without the user having to manually manage a thread pool or similar. It's handled completely transparently for the user by the language and runtime

what the fuck is "data locality." do you seriously expect me to believe that you're improving performance by fiddling around with data structure feng shui?? NO. we are not going to waste our time trying to appease the L1 cache-spirit when we have real investors to appeas

I was baffled when I learned that the english version of #FantasyRealms does not underline card names in the color of their suit like the german version does. it is way harder to tell if a given card works for the hand you're building or not. But this is nothing a few fineliners can't fix:

Equal work deserves equal pay. 3 years ago, the EU agreed that payment of all employees should be clearly indicated, so that men and women receive the same. Now, EU countries are bringing these new rules into national law.

Maybe there is a nuanced discussion to have about using LLMs to write Haskell, but it cannot happen before LLM crawlers stop DDOSing the Haskell Gitlab instance.

Disney Animation remade three songs for ASL. For these, we resurrected the original data and pipeline version, reanimated (from near scratch in some places), relit where needed, and re-rendered. Probably the hardest way to do this, but definitely the right way to do it, so that's what we did!

Went from knowing nothing about NixOS to contributing to it in 20 days! I don't know of many other Linux distros that'd allow that. Feels really reminiscent of Bevy's approach to FOSS: make the average user capable of contributing on onboarding, then provide a shallow on-ramp.

Trying out NixOS, honestly quite impressed. I replicated my Arch setup in 3 hours, 1 of which was just spent wiping the 2TB drive my old Windows installation was on. Here's to hoping the setup transfers over to my other computers without trouble.

Over the last three weekends, my father and I built what I call the ultimate board game shelf. I designed it in #FreeCAD and tried out the new assembly workbench in 1.0 (it's sadly not quite there yet, let's see if 1.1 fixes the issues) Now my collection has space to grow :)

This argument never made sense to me. If someone is willing to wait several years for a PC version of a Sony game, they would never buy a PS5 in the first place. I certainly won't, but got several Sony games on Steam Most will just wait until emulation is good and pirate the game or not play at all

One important piece of context here is that when someone buys a PlayStation, Sony doesn't just get their $500+. The company also gets 30% of *everything* they buy on the PlayStation Store. In other words, Sony makes the most money by getting as many people as possible on its consoles

Just found out that a website written in Haskell that I deployed and forgot about over *7 years ago* went down this week, not because it crashed, but because the logs were so long that the server ran out of disk space 🙈 Another tally in the column of "Haskell just works"

Last night's biggest surprise was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, led by Casey Hudson, who directed KOTOR (and Anthem). Exciting news for lots of people... but Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year, which means that 2030 is an *optimistic* guess. Maybe it'll be a PlayStation 7 game

I have to give my university-issued Laptop back soon, so I am reviving my old personal Laptop that did not see any use in the last three years. The whole process was: 1. Log into Wi-Fi 2. cd nix-config 3. git pull 4. nixos-rebuild switch --flake . God I love #NixOS

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
