I'm attending a digital humanities event in Montreal. There was a keynote on AI and something about the talk made me wonder if it had been written by Claude. I said as much in the Q&A. As I posed the question, the speaker shifted, looking slightly uncomfortable. What he said next shocked the room +

I am absolutely shite at recognising when someone is flirting with me. Like, comically bad at it. My mates would mock me about it. But something happened today that made me so happy. 1/?

“A cruise-missile assault aiming to change the government in Iran is, in reality, a desperate plea for regime change in Washington, D.C.”

My instant reaction at 3 a.m. yesterday was not whether Khamenei would be killed or oil prices or anything else but this This undeclared, unexplained war is illegal. Full stop 28 hours later, it is still the worse abuse of power in U.S. history. Impeach My column www.inquirer.com/opinion/trum...

I want them in front of a camera and a microphone every day to express outrage and explain to checked-out Americans what is going on, and why they should also be outraged. They should contextualize all these crimes and atrocities, and tell people what they can do. I want my leaders to LEAD.

Running with a wheelbarrow (yeah, i know). Wheel dropped into a hole in the yard. Wheelbarrow flipped over with me still holding on. Landed in my knee on the metal supports. Six stitches in my knee. I could spread the skin apart a bit and see my kneecap.

This is why I support freedom of expression. Appropriately, it is the chaos of a system that supports free speech that gives rise to the grand process of democratic self-governance and the ideally upward arc of human progress and flourishing. Yesterday a Stoppard play, today a tweet.

The 80-year recipe stoking America’s Prosperity: 1) Free-market capital investments in brilliant ideas… 2) enabled by Engineering Innovations… 3) based on Science Research in Universities… 4) funded by Grants from the US Government. It’s time more people understood this.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief. 1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

It’s 9am TFT time here, and citizens are already gathering to protest Tariffs by the United States. Our plain clothes Officer Penguins are attempting to maintain calm, but unfortunately we keep losing them in the crowd.

I keep hearing pundits saying that various Trump crimes & follies "aren't landing with the American people." I can't believe we're still talking like this. The US information system is broken, just as it was broken throughout the election. People *aren't hearing about what he's doing*.

Wrote up something about Techdirt's recent coverage, and why (whether we like it or not) we need to be a "democracy blog" now, rather than just a "tech" blog (not that we've ever been just a tech blog). This story is *the* story and it impacts everything else. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/w...

Every local TV meteorologist should say in their broadcast every morning and night exactly how this will damage their ability to give us the weather forecast. The local weather people are probably the most trusted people on TV.

@noaa.gov, one of the nation’s most prominent scientific agencies, began firing employees yesterday. The agency is expected to lose about 10% of its workforce. 🧵 👇https://apnews.com/article/national-weather-service-layoffs-trump-doge-a65360a1eb2500b7d47c9c966e383f4a

Also mention the leaks/theft of FAFSA data on calls to your congressional reps.

Sally Hudson@sallylhudson.bsky.social

Hear me out — If parents call colleges freaked about their FAFSA data being leaked, schools may have to issue statements — which would reach a whole lot more families about how warped this is. Organizing isn’t always calling electeds. Sometimes it’s just calling people with a bigger megaphone.

it’s important that high up in every story air traffic controllers are ID’d as federal government employees. I do not assume most Americans know this but they should. This is what happens when we underfund, hollow out and ignore the federal workforce. GOP actions lead to preventable deaths.

I’m a firm believer that the “why” is missing from most of education. How many times did you hear (or say) “when will I ever use this” in algebra class? Learning the why (just a few examples) would have gone a long way to keep kids from tuning out or just going through the motions.

This is a failure of the news media, but also of Democrats. If they decided that for the next 12 hours they're all going to buttonhole reporters and say "We need to investigate this, Trump may have just taken an $18 million bribe from a Chinese national" those reporters would cover it.

Paul Waldman@paulwaldman.bsky.social

I've searched a bunch of major news sites for "Justin Sun" and in most cases you get 5 stories about him buying and eating that $6 million banana and zero about him putting millions of dollars in Donald Trump's pocket

🧵🧵 While everyone was understandably focused on national politics, something happened in Texas this week that has received far less attention than it deserves, given its potential consequences. And I'd guess even very plugged-in folks dont realize the full scope. Let me explain (at length):
