It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

this is honestly invigorating—maybe because the US far right has been on the rise most of my life, maybe because it suggests why the far right being unpopular is not enough. mostly: because it gives us something we can do

Tarik Abou-Chadi@tabouchadi.bsky.social

Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

This is one good example of how appropriations hardball can work if you're willing to not blink first. Another: take your pick for demands and restrictions on funding Executive Office of the President. Yes, literally defund the White House. EOP is the central hub of the assault on the Constitution.

What?? Medicare pays doctors to blame vaccines for sickness?!

Jake Scott, MD@jakescottmd.bsky.social

HHS wants a new Medicare code that pays doctors extra only when they attribute a patient’s symptoms to a vaccine. Vaccine critics say doctors are paid to push vaccines. We aren’t. Under this code, we’d be paid to blame them. My new piece in @cidrap.bsky.social: www.cidrap.umn.edu/childhood-va...

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

Another interesting thing that happened in Brazil and might be worth considering in the U.S.: a triumph of the liberal field was to detach Bolsonarism from the right. It wasn’t about left or right anymore; it was both left and right, liberals and centrists, fighting against far-right extremism.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Well I have decided that Mondays are for awkwardness. Mondays are the days I do the things I feel shitty about, the things I have procrastinated far too long on, the difficult awkward conversations. Mondays are for being brave in dumbest ways.

And then you keep putting it off so it gets even more awful and then there's another thing and those things accumulate until they are waking you up at night because you feel bad about them and over time you just feel generally shitty? (God I hope it's not just me.)

I love the writing process. I think lots of people who do writing like the act of writing, but I think this is so important and under-appreciated by a lot of people. Revision processes (including asking others for input, revising oneself) is thinking, crafting, strengthening.

Anyway, it's good, I suppose, to get perspectives different from those I typically do, hannging out with journalists, nature educators, and writers. It helps alleviate my frustration from not understanding why if we all know X, we don't do Y. Turns out, X is nowhere near universal.
