It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

You can also do stuff like force messaging votes to make your opposition look bad, but Canadian governments hate their legislatures so much they won't even do that.

I imagine the BC NDP might tell themselves they were very likely to lose whenever the election came and the polls six weeks ago were as good as they were ever going to be for them. But when you're in government you can do stuff. And the BC NDP just lost two years when they could have done stuff.

Well, when you put it that way...

imagine your legacy being using your political career to undermine your entire pre-politics career just so you can make the most humiliating blunder and lose to a party that was on the verge of collapse

Okay, so I'm not going to wait until tomorrow. How could the former head of the BC Civil Liberties Association been so milquetoast on, you know, civil liberties.

James Gemmill @jamesgemmill.bsky.social

I think I'm going to wait until tomorrow morning to digest all this.

My not so novel personal theory of Canadian politics (with Quebec and Alberta being exceptions) is the electorate at federal or provincial level will give a party 2, sometimes 3, terms to govern then they'll hand the football to the other party for 2-3 terms. Rinse, repeat.

They're throwing spaghetti at the wall. It doesn't mean it's not really dangerous - and whatever they try, we'll be prepared to counter - but folks should be clear that this is not some well-orchestrated highly competent plan unfurling.

The reason we keep hearing about desperate schemes to boost Republican chances in the midterms—Announce we're buying Russian diesel! Sue to preemptively reject a Democratic victory in Alaska!—is because they don't have a secret plan that will overturn a midterm loss, not because they do.

“Vancouver, grow up.” Video by Bob Mackin of Colleen Hardwick last night insulting the intelligence of anyone who voted for Ken Sim four years ago or Pete Fry now. I wonder if her base will ever change their opinions on whether this rhetoric has been an effective way of expanding her support.

How to overcome that? They certainly tried in their well-produced ads on YT. But to reword the old axiom: It is difficult to get a someone to understand something, when their [home value] depends on not understanding.

One City is I think is fundamentally representing the people who *want* to live in Vancouver, but can't afford too. Unfortunately, those people can't vote here. It's going to take a lot of thought and work to figure out how to overcome that. FWIW.

5. Anecdotally from talking to friends and neighbours is that there a lot of incumbent homeowners who view themselves as left-wing, but express that via NIMBYism. Stick it to "big developers," etc. And, the elephant in the room, is they don't really want their home values to decrease.

They don't connect the dots that opposing density city-wide means the towers they think they're opposing becomes the City's only housing option. Etc. Or that density and infrastructure (transit, shops, restaurants, public spaces) that comes with it, adds value to their lives.

This brings us to One City, who I support (and will continue to). I think my takeaway is that it's going to take time, perhaps a lot of time, to build up name recognition. I also don't think "One City" is the best branding because, lets face it, municipal politics is a low-information environment...

...and "One City" doesn't convey what you're about to the voter whose only attention to municipal politics is by looking at the ballot in front of them. That may come with time. A name-change? "One Vancouver" or "Build Vancouver?" I dunno.

3. The Greens (and all Green parties everywhere) have built-in name recognition simply by the word "Green." Don't really need to advertise for the public to know what your about. 4. Fry having been around 2 terms is important. They also have longevity in their favour. But...

1. COPE has the name recognition that comes simply from longevity of a 50+ yrs history. 2. I think the Streisand effect was in full play. Sean Orr won the most council votes. Would he have, absent Sim making him the bogeyman of his campaign? I think maybe not.

Vancouver preliminary council results: Beating up on Sean Orr seems to have backfired spectacularly.

Chad Skelton@chadskelton.bsky.social

If you're interested in a municipal race, it's worth finding the results on the city's own site. There seems to be a lag on a lot of the news websites and some only have mayoral results but not council. Vancouver: results.vancouver.ca/results.html... Surrey: electionresults.surrey.ca#at/1/ar/1/ct...

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

Interestingly, Bell also provides the answer to the famous question “where are the flying cars?”. Answer: they’re helicopters and the problem isn’t the machine but the inability to do traffic control. Look back at the Jetsons and you’ll see that George is one of maybe 20 people flying to work.

boy Trump fucked the American auto industry. first he yanks their EV subsidies, leading them to slash production and write off tens of billions in investment, then he jacks up the price of oil by 50%, leading to skyrocketing EV demand going almost entirely to China bc GM et al left the market
