FYI Southern Ontario friends: at least two of my local pharmacies in K-W have updated covid shots available NOW for all adults. (The "only high-risk groups" availability was slated to extend to later this month, but apparently they opened it up early.)

Marketing said they wanted a promotional video showing the book "in the wild". I'm assuming the Puget Sound shellfish research laboratory's beach counts as "in the wild".

If I went to Switzerland and won a Swiss watch precision contest, I would literally never talk about anything else

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

I went to Geneva a few weeks ago and spoke on a panel about the nature of time for a Geneva Watch Days event. While I was there, on a lark, I entered a competition to most precisely calibrate a Swiss watch. And today I found out that I won! 😃 www.instagram.com/reel/Dd6hUTB...

To spell some of it out: - The colleagues are kind & brilliant - The students are exceptional, 2nd to no other school - Minimal BS in the way of research Cons: - cold - canadian geese are scary (but cute) If you want to do world-class research, look no further than UWaterloo CS

If Lake Ontario becomes Lake America, the memory device HOMES will be changed to SHAME. Seems appropriate.

Blue Bottle Games, as a policy, does not use generative AI. It's something we've discussed as a team, weighing the pros and cons, and ultimately, we decided it was not for us. Recently, while chatting with a colleague, she mentioned it was useful hearing our reasoning. So: Sharing time! 1/12

For anyone who thinks increasing oil & gas production is the path to energy independence, you're dead wrong. While we continue to rely on fossil fuels, we're held hostage to global pricing. The real path to energy security is local production of renewables and grid-scale storage. #EnergyTransition

This is what Canadians want - not U.S. over-priced, under-performing, old-tech vehicles. The BYD Dolphin G a plug-In Hybrid with a 1.5-liter paired with a 195-horsepower electric motor and the combined range of 1,000 kilometers for approx. $25,000 - $35,000. #cdnpoli #canada shorturl.at/PgErb

It's a classic strategy of short-term pain, long-term more pain.

This is what the entire video is intended to couch. It’s the only part that matters. “We can’t afford to restrain the growth of an important part of our energy mix, oil and gas, to meet a short term goal,” Carney said. “Our emissions will be higher in the next few years”

Tried this and 1. Yeah I’m in these models all right 2. Even these tiny summaries contained an outright fabrication (I did not create AI Dungeon) and half-truths (I am way more “random science blogger” than “researcher” when it comes to “AI”)

Bethany Brookshire@beebrookshire.bsky.social

I saw this site which measures if you are "in the weights" (via @shiplives.bsky.social). At first I thought it measured how much of your work was used to train something, but that's not the case. In this case, it's how much an AI "knows" about you. I scored very high intheweights.com

I just learned that the term "carbon footprint" was developed by BP to offload responsibility for climate change onto individuals. Something like that's happening in higher ed with AI. Institutions capitulate or dodge; students are submitting; & they believe it's their individual failing. 7/

I am looking forward to this year's Bridges #MathArt conference. It was fun being the Regular Papers Chair, but it was also quite some work (my Thunderbird folder counts close to 2k received or written emails 😅). Yet, the works are amazing, cannot wait for Galway in August. 🇮🇪

It’s April 30 (in this time zone). Martin, Kerry and I have been working with authors on their submissions for the Bridges conference and the editing is (nearly) done. @msmathcomp.bsky.social

I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but to me, sharing a screenshot of chatbot output to make a point of some kind is an excellent way to undermine any credibility that might otherwise be granted to you in the context of whatever you're trying to say.

Here's Henri Matisse drawing a portrait of his son. Watch his head and eyes, and how often they look back and forth between his drawing and his son. Why does he look back and forth so frequently—why can't he just draw his son from memory?
And where exactly is he looking? 4/
