Embodied carbon ("Building material production") is really insignificant compared to other emissions. It is not worth adding cost to densification to drive these numbers down – concrete and steel are nothing compared to the energy required to heat/cool suburban houses and fuel cars to access them.

Fischer 🛠️🚇@fischer.bsky.social

study: not only do apartments reduce emissions through improved energy efficiency and better travel patterns, they also have significantly less embodied carbon per resident than low density housing because they use building materials more efficiently www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

We've shared our alternative Met Hub plans with the city and they didn't bite. There is no reason that part of Met Hub couldn't be built today with enough space for transit to be added later. This is a deliberate choice made by the Parks Dept. and Mayor's office.

houndstepdad reposted

Deeply silly decision from the Parks Department that seems to be driven much more by Council prerogative than anything else. Reactivating is these tracks is the one of the cheapest, easiest ways to run more trains on Queens Boulevard.

Andrew Lynch | vanshnookenraggen@vanshnookenraggen.com

NYC Parks, Queensway, & TfPL don't want a train here. The plan from day 1 was to use the entire ROW for park space and intentionally design the Queensway in a way that would require demolishing the entire park to add trains later. Anyone claiming this won't preclude transit is lying or an idiot.

Mayor Mamdani is going full speed ahead with plans to build the QueensWay park over abandoned train tracks in Central Queens, after his administration decisively told advocates for bringing transit to the right of way that he won’t change course.

This is the wrong decision for transit in New York. Existing rights-of-way that travel through dense, under-served neighborhoods do not grow on trees, and it's a massive own goal for any city to not take advantage of them. No plan does this better than @queenslink.org.

This is an incredibly poor decision from the Mamdani administration. AFAIK the QueensWay park proposal exists almost entirely to block QueensLink. Blocking an existing right-of-way that travels through dense, under-served neighborhoods is an own goal that no city can afford.

Congratulations, Virginia! Republicans are trying to tilt the midterm elections in their favor, but they haven’t done it yet. Thanks for showing us what it looks like to stand up for our democracy and fight back.

houndstepdad reposted

Aside from who started it, states like CA and VA putting a counter-gerrymander up to a referendum, where people are told and can make a decision on the context for why it's being done, has vastly more democratic legitimacy than state legislators rushing it through because they got bullied by POTUS.

If you thought those platforms were packed already, just wait. But QueensLink tackles this directly. More trains = Less crowding. Use the Link in Bio to Tell Mayor Mamdani and the City Council: NO WAY with QueensWay! #buildtheQueensLink

QueensLink transforms Queens Boulevard with the G to Forest Hills! 50% more local service means shorter waits, more destinations and fewer delays and disruptions

Another classic post-Homan day where around school dismissal time we get a flurry of ICE vehicles all across our neighborhoods. Today one vehicle led an observer to their own home and pointed at it. This is a sick game to them, but we won’t be intimidated and we won’t stop until DHS is abolished.

The central question of the last decade+ in America is if the police can kill you if they feel afraid, and it was my understanding that you sign up for the job knowing there’s going to be danger and you’re paid to be better than “I shot him because I was scared”

Sorry but anyone who tries to tell you (leftistly) that Calhoun is a more authentic exemplar of the American political tradition than Frederick Douglass is a wrecker.

The Trump-Vance administration just used your taxes to pay for an ICE agent to do this to a 21-year-old kid, who was only protesting because another ICE agent killed a mother of three, who was only there because ICE agents are kidnapping your neighbors

ICE must be abolished. It has become a lawless, rogue agency. Federal law enforcement agencies must follow the law, if they're going to have any credibility enforcing it. We are demanding justice for Renee Good and the prosecution of ICE agent Jonathan Ross for her murder.

Watching the segment: The first thing I'm going to zero in on is the crime stats. Here's how 60 Minutes set it up: - Leavitt saying the people going to CECOT were the worst of the worst - Then 60 Minutes saying the Human Rights Watch report says that nearly half had no criminal history at all

Ben Krimmel@benkrimmel.bsky.social

Here's the rest of Bari Weiss' memo. "We do not present the administration's argument for why it sent 252 Venezuelans to CECOT," and on Sec. Noem's trip "no comment from her or her staff about what her goal on that trip was... or if she had or has concerns about the treatment of detainees." LOL!

seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

the actual contrast is between spanberger/mamdani (focused message, vigorous campaigns) and sherrill (unfocused, half-hearted)

houndstepdad reposted

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.

The headlines that have pics of Spanberger and Mamdani like "Which Way Modern Dem Man??" Come on. The answer is OBVIOUSLY (and has been, and will be) "both," "all," "whichever". What part of "gigantic diverse coalition of half the electorate" is confusing to people?

Our failures to build transit and housing share many of the same causes — like listening to the voices of a few loud NIMBYs over the urgent needs of this city’s working people. By voting @YesOnAffHousing.bsky.social props 2-5, we can start to change this.
