ICE just indiscriminately stopped a citizen at a bus stop in front of the co-op. If this is how they treat the President of the Minneapolis City Council who is legally observing, just think of what they’re doing to everyone else in our City.

The Trump administration is calling their phony investigation into Ilhan “World War Eleven”. They continue to wage war against Minneapolis, and we will continue to beat them every single time.

Minneapolis has already shown it’s stronger than the hateful attacks any President can throw at us. I stand with our Somali community and am going to remain vigilant in support of all of our neighbors as the elections nears.

I helped plant this garden early this summer. I need to walk up and check on it, but it was going strong a month ago.

Because of Lila Smith and her husband Karl, this spot has gone from a dangerous open piece of land next to a railroad and transformed into not only a beautiful community garden, but a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives here. Read more about the history: mailchi.mp/eastbankmpls...

They spent years trying to navigate working with BNSF, the City, and private property owners to try and find a better solution, slowly coming to agreements and finding grants along the way to realize their vision.

A breakthrough finally came a couple years ago when my office and Lila met with Public Works and got the City to agree to get rid of the remaining public asphalt, clearing the way to start the work.

Perfect weather for my commute home from City Hall on this #WeekWithoutDriving. As someone who commutes by bike year-round, I know firsthand how important it is that our infrastructure investments make our streets safe for all modes of transportation.

Endless thanks to everyone who added their name in support, and an extra thank you to Minneapolis city council president (and former MCAD adjunct professor) @elliottpayne.org for speaking at today’s rally!

I was proud to join MCAD teachers this afternoon in their fight for a fair contract that includes protections against AI and shared governance with the administration. As a former adjunct professor and @seiumn.bsky.social 284 member, I’ll always show up for workers!

This weekend I had the honor of speaking at the Stonewall Sports 10th anniversary gala. I love riding my bike past Northeast Park & seeing it filled with Stonewall’s kickball league. Our LGBTQIA+ community living authentically and experiencing joy in our parks is the perfect antithesis to fascism.

Had a great time speaking at the Bottineau Neighborhood Association annual meeting tonight. Thanks to all the neighbors who stepped up to serve on the board!

Tonight at our Board of Estimate & Taxation meeting we deadlocked on deciding the maximum levy for the City and the Parks. I voted in full support of the park board’s levy request and the city’s request throughout every single amendment brought forward, but we could not find consensus on that.

Cutting the city’s levy at the BET cuts off the flexibility for us to do the needed due diligence in our regular markup process to be able to restore these essential services and also cut the levy.

I look forward to the BET coming together next week to finalize our levy and will keep working with my colleagues to see what’s needed to gain their support for our parks and city.

We need the flexibility of the City’s current proposed levy to be able to both restore the cuts to important city programs and also look to lower the property tax increase.

We’ve proven to do this before with the 2025 budget when the BET approved levy was an 8.3% increase and, through the city council’s amendment process, we lowered that increase to 6.8% while still having over 70 people-centered budget amendments.

Cuts to our co-enforcement program which has gotten back millions of dollars in stolen wages to workers, cuts to critical unarmed public safety services, cuts to our new election system that will help secure our democracy…

Cuts to our neighborhood & community relations department that does crucial immigration legal protection & LGBTQIA+ equity work, and lastly cuts that would limit our ability to restore our contingency fund to protect the City’s long-term fiscal health.

The park board has successfully made the case that they need this 5.8% increase just to keep the lights on for our best in the nation park system and I fully support them. I don’t believe we should force them into even more cuts by not granting their request.

Funding the full city levy at the BET is the best way to restore the numerous cuts proposed by the mayor. In this budget there are currently cuts to our homelessness response, cuts to the City Auditor that would impact critical oversight work…

I just got done speaking to 500 minneapolis families from across the city on why I support delaying the MPS closure plan. After COVID, the CDD, and Operation Metro Surge our students need stability. This plan is rushed & still leaves many questions about the district’s financial future unanswered.

MPD overages were hidden from the public, hidden from the city council. Now other departments face cuts. Residents suffer unsustainable property tax increases. Fact that we are here is a "failure of government and a failure of democracy."

Elliott Payne reposted

Payne: Other city departments manage within their budget. MPD "lacks the basic administrative competency... Perhaps we need to treat this department differently."

Council President Payne: "we've politicized this conversation to the point that now it has become toxic to provide fiscal oversight of this department, as though you are some unhinged person detached from reality for daring to question how much money is spent on policing."
