Ok, small story for the end of Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access I've always, going way back, given my RPG characters little van dyke mustaches, like Cardinal Richelieu in a Three Muskeeteer's movie. "That's what a dashing, derring-doer looks like," I'd think.

The NYT devoting two pieces to the Cheesecake Factory "controversy" and none to the latest rape allegations against POTUS is a good reminder that there is no attack against Obama bad faith enough that the press doesn't amplify it, while with Trump when the charges are horrendous, caution abounds.

22. More broadly, we cannot hope for our republic to survive if elites like Trump, who act with impunity for the law and morality, are allowed to carry on without fear of accountability.

I can't really believe it but it seems to be the case that the Times has not covered a credible accusation of rape against the President of the United States, but has two solid stories on Obama's cheesecake factory quip.

Brazilians recommending not to amplify right-wing talking points by dunking and quoting, as a winning strategy Next day, my tl is full of people dunking on rfk jr I literally would not have seen the bigotry if it wasn't for y'all repeating it. That's exactly what the Brazilians were on about!

The online part was important too, of course. We collectively decided to not interact with any right wing post or comment ever. Trolls and bots lost their power. This is a good lesson.

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

This is one good example of how appropriations hardball can work if you're willing to not blink first. Another: take your pick for demands and restrictions on funding Executive Office of the President. Yes, literally defund the White House. EOP is the central hub of the assault on the Constitution.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

Is all this really feasible? Won't Trump refuse to sign anything like this? Won't he litigate it? Won't it lead to government shutdowns? Yes, yes, and yes. But it's still absolutely doable and necessary. Here's why: newrepublic.com/article/2171...

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

I think it's worth noting that when Republicans say they're "tough on crime" they mean Black and Brown people, not crime.

Kyle Griffin@kylegriffin1.bsky.social

ProPublica: Ken Paxton says he's tough on crime. His trust invested $600,000 in a convicted fraudster's company. "The blind trust's investment in Wildcatter offers a new, unreported look at the attorney general's financial ties with … executives whose prosecutions he typically celebrates."

I felt a bit vindicated by a former BioWare dev who said BioWare's mistake was not just pushing out new stories with basically same systems. YES. Stop reinventing the wheel and just give us good stories. Somehow BioWare didn't want to be the story games company, which is what it was.

David Axelrod and David Brooks clutching their pearls because El-Sayed didn’t roll over for a racist is such a perfect example of America’s white guy politics that it would sound made up if you put it in a novel

Part of the answer to "how did we get here?" is that many major journalists—since 1998, Crawford has covered SCOTUS for PBS, ABC, and CBS—are lying bigots. Here Crawford is praising a guy who asked a dumb racist question, glitched out when asked why, then admitted he wanted a Christian theocracy.

One would be good and the other would be bad because one cause is good and the other is bad. We are not in the realm of procedural justice concerns anymore, liberalism is not obligated to be neutral on the question of its own existence.

Chuck Schumer — one of the most powerful Democrats in the country — has not issued statements to the press or through his social media channels about the administration’s attack on Ilhan Omar, which critics have described as a five alarm fire for the state of democracy in the U.S.

FWIW, I refer to this as "closing the hardball gap." It's the idea that asymmetric adherence to norms is itself destablizing, and that norm-breaking can/should be done in democracy's defense. This is a bit dated but it gets at the basic point:

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

will try to answer these in a piece next week but for now i will say that part of the *point* of court expansion, in my mind, is to create a disequilibrium — a potential race to the bottom — that will force a truce.

This is 100 per cent correct in my view. Carrie is, as someone on here put it, ultimately a tragedy based on 'what if, on the absolute worst moment of the worst day of your awful life, someone handed you a fully loaded gun?' and for various reasons the crescendo leading up to that doesn't work now.

Martin Concagh@mconcagh.bsky.social

Actually my hot take about Carrie, and The Stand, is that they could/should only be adapted as period pieces.

It's not hard. Both Yglesias moderates and Khanna leftists give MAGA politicians legitimacy because they want MAGA's base. Ossoff simply does not give a shit about the MAGA base, which allows him to speak with fierce clarity about MAGA politicians. He is willing to bet on an anti-MAGA majority.

Bill McKibben@billmckibben.bsky.social

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

Between this and the AES debate tonight, it's refreshing to hear this from democrats. I'm glad every question is not treated as an opportunity to pivot to "kitchen table issues," but is instead met with all the reasons why the R is a gigantic piece of shit.

I think this is kinda the crux of it all, like being hungry and only having candy available -- you want it to work, it feels like it should work, you want it to be satisfying - and sometimes it occasionally hits great - but long term it doesn't have the nutrition to actually be stable and satiating

this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.
