lawsuits good. lawfare better. the left has got to learn to pick the weaklings of the liberal-fascist alliance and start turning them into piggy banks for better lawsuits

A game streamer I’ve gotten into recently is Rhadamant. Found him while learning Ostranauts. Dug into his channel and turns out he’s into exactly my type of shit. If you like management, automation, simulation type games, he’s a good one.

In iOS, if you’ve got a video playing in the background and then try to start another video in another app (e.g. Bluesky), you might expect that the background video pauses and the new video begins playing. And that is what happens, except you no longer have audio until you dis/reconnect Bluetooth.

Another reason to not use AI is of course that it's a vector for not only corporate censorship but outright manipulation. You are prompting a system built by and designed to serve corporations' version of reality. And open models won't save you; they're distilled from the corporate models.

Among things Meta did in Brazil was have their AI bot within WhatsApp allow users to generate election poster for Flavio but deny requests to do so for Lula. When folks asked for posters for invented candidates, AI tagged them with #22 - Flavio's # - in a country where folks vote by #.

They call it cloud computing because they run it on big shitty methane generators that create a “cloud” of smoke in poor neighborhoods.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

its very funny that there is now a claim that code is cheap because like.. you're still paying devs and now you're paying Anthropic too if you were a solo dev, code used to be free, you weren't paying yourself, but now you pay Anthropic code is actually more expensive now lol

My thoughts have been, maybe don't campaign on an online gambling ban, but definitely enact it at the first opportunity. But if this post is true, I mean... That's like smokers being in favor of further restrictions on public smoking. That doesn't typically happen, so when it does maybe run with it.

That said, smoking did introduce and bond me to some of the most interesting people I've ever met. So, you know. Who's to say. But also, dropping the habit was ultimately a massive quality of life win. Don't smoke, and if you do, quit, that is my truest advice. There are better ways to make friends

One last caveat though, if for some reason you feel you must choose between online gambling vs smoking as your vice...smoke lol. It is very bad for you so don't do it, but at least there is _some_ potential upside to it beyond a dopamine button and a thrill that obscures your ruin.

Tangentially, as a former smoker, it's hard to overstate how much that vice can shape you in subtle ways. You choose your bar based on smoker-friendliness. Cigs become your foremost way to introduce yourself to new people. It tints your perception of winter, because smoking in the windy cold sucks.

No, fuck that. Just ban it. I’m so sick of mealy mouthed Democrats refusing to take a clear position on anything. Online gambling has been an abject disaster. It’s the next opioid epidemic. Ban it.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment

this is probably true and also points to a failure of our culture to properly constrain digital tech. no one goes around saying they’re a hammer-person bc we have witty aphorisms warning against that, eg: when your only tool is a hammer everything looks like a nail. where’s our anticomputer slogan

Colin@colin-fraser.net

I think there’s a thing where people who have understood themselves for the last 20 years or so to not be “computer people” feel that AI is the first new technology that basically makes sense and is intuitive, and it makes them feel like they are finally good at using computers

I hope Lula is able to use his popular mandate to show us how you deal with a party that is explicitly hostile to democracy. Cut them out, root and stem, then salt the earth where they came from.

I am not familiar with what he can actually do under the Brazilian constitution, and without a majority legislature. But sounds like he's off to a good start cutting Flávio out from fleeing.

We in the US could use an example to point to. I have little hope that the Dems would follow such an example following their near-certain electoral resurgence coming up, but at least it would give us something concrete to point to, like, "See? That's how it's done. So why aren't you doing it?"

It can’t be underemphasized that, all else aside, LLM products, even the very newest most “advanced” paid models, as a rule, output baseless claims and present them as well-researched facts. You won’t be able to tell the difference unless you’re already a hypervigilant expert in the subject matter.

In every practical sense, their output is information-free. And the cost of generating that output is tremendous, even before factoring in the externalized, socialized costs.

It is in a lot of ways just an abdication of responsibility, of taking a role in forming the political environment. It's the fundamental problem of shallow popularism; you assume you're just a powerless actor reacting to the "preferences" of the "median voter", which is a loser's way of thinking.

There's a constant low-level discussion on English-language bluesky about the electoral consequences of transphobic rhetoric from left-liberals but I think it's honestly worse than "they might not vote for you", it's more like, you're cutting yourself off from political labor and talent.

If we want to see the Democrats do this we will need them not merely to start combatting GOP messaging but to stop fucking _amplifying_ it. Enough is enough of Democrats embracing racism, transphobia, Islamophobia, anti-abortion, etc.

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

An important lesson for the US here specifically is that Lula defeated Bolsonaro in part by actually, importantly, _not being Bolsonaro_

I spent all day writing the thread in my head about how Bolsonaro's win was the culmination of a 20-year project to end Brazilian democracy, with the participation of both domestic elites and foreign actors like the US state department and Meta. This is all true, of course, except he didn't win.

I’m gonna call it. The real “AI” bubble is not even the data center debt bubble, and it’s not even the “replace all knowledge work” bubble. Underlying it all is the B2B SaaS bubble. Bunch of overvalued shit for decades of very little to really show.

Not because software per se is bad, but because it’s rarely been designed nor sold as a real aid but as an “eating the world” thing that’ll help you fire people who until then gave a fuck. It’s gonna turn out that the giving a fuck really fucking matters

It’s gonna turn out at the bottom that people in the trenches have been undervalued, and companies have been paying way too much for software that doesn’t actually help the people who make it all work

every vibe-coded project right now: "Hey guys! Check out this cool thing I built. It's basically ready or at least will be in a few months. Let me know if you find any bugs because I'm kind of tired of finding them myself."

Espousing transphobic policy "strategically" just being transphobic. Espousing racist immigration policy "strategically" is just being racist. Enabling bigotry, whether or not in the name of political expedience, is still enabling bigotry, and enabling bigotry makes you a bigot.

There are no “great conservative thinkers” and I don’t think there ever really have been. When your raison d'être is to justify your contemporary status quo, few avenues for innovative thought remain. And as the status quo changes, so too must conservatism. Obsolete from the first breath.
