Blimey... I went to that ZX Microfair. Bought a copy of School Daze from the Microsphere stall, where they were all dressed as teachers and schoolkids.

Finding some of the reaction on here to the 'stockpiling' stuff a bit odd. The Russians successfully firebombed the last prime minister's house! There was a cyberattack on a French supermarket a few weeks ago!

Largely because if you see how much bottled water you'd stock for a family - 4 litres per person per day - if supplies were cut off entirely, the advice would be ignored. Better to aim for 'three days of no internet connection and intermittent power and water supply' and build from there.

Note that Lidl currently has Spaten Münchner Hell in stock for £2.19 a bottle, which is a terrific bargain.

BLOG POST: “It’s exciting to be able to buy imported Helles beers from both Augustiner and Tegernsee at Sainsbury’s, while we’re picking up canned tuna, Woolite and ‘crispy nuggets’. And £3.40 a bottle doesn’t seem like a terrible price, either.” But... boakandbailey.com/2026/10/its-...

One of the greatest spreads ever to appear in Viz. I used to have this framed on my wall.

Whenever I see that done, it reminds me of this frame in Viz's 'A Day in the Life of a Newspaper'

I don’t think I’ve ever been more horrified by a brewery announcement. “From a single tap, drinkers can now choose from 135 different Heineken expressions, each shaped by a combination of traditional brewing characteristics, such as strength, intensity, with options ranging from 0.0% to 5% ABV.”

Nutters in the RE department invited a reformed IRA terrorist to give an assembly. He raved about how he gave it all up after finding God, before illustrating his former life by asking one kid to look under their seat - where he'd put a fake bomb. Parents went apeshit. Think it made the local paper.

I was a features sub. The asst night editor said: "We've chucked all the features out of the edition. Can you sub news?" He passed me and a few other casuals over to news, who showed us the style: cap up the first word, no drop caps, cut from the foot of the story.

Gradually, websites got overloaded and fell over, except for the PB board. I yelled "Christ, another plane has hit the second tower." The digital editor shouted: "That's just Popbitch bollocks." Then someone switched a TV on. Not much work done at EMAP after that.

I was hearing various bits from other subs across London: people were bricking it in the Canary Wharf tower, with rumours of an evacuation. I got released early to go to the Express at Blackfriars, which was buzzing. Lots of subs had seen the news and come in on their day off.

At FHM I got an SMS on my old Nokia lump from a friend subbing on a news shift at the Guardian: "A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center". I imagined something like a King Kong biplane. I opened the Popbitch message board. That was when it registered.

RIP Richard O'Sullivan, who annoyed my junior-school headmaster to a mystifying degree: "Some of you may watch that programme about Dick Turpin. You should understand that the real Dick Turpin was a BAD LOT."
