Today marks exactly the fifth anniversary of starting the “Wright Files: Egerton’s Pickle” project. What started as a tiny love letter to Sam Manthorpe’s “The Detective” on the Commodore 64 has gradually evolved into something much bigger and more ambitious. #indiegames #mystery #adventure #gamedev

Hello world! I'm making #OSAD, an #indiegame sci-fi thriller set in an alt-history Poland! Exploration, deep lore, cool secrets, collecting junk - it's all here. If it's something that strikes a chord with you, I'd appreciate it if you added the game to your Steam wishlist! (all links in my bio)

For this sunny Sunday afternoon session of pseudo-philosophical musings nobody actually asked for, I present to you: Things I wish I had learned earlier in life (as a kid or teenager, even if my brain wasn’t developed enough to fully grasp them). A thread. [1/9]

[9/9] • failing to learn all this makes life unnecessary harder and the sooner you understand it, the easier your life will generally be (even if certain aspects of it become harder) Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Have a great evening and stay hydrated.

P.S.: And if you know all this and still choose to hurt or exploit others, then fuck you, you manipulative piece of shit.

[7/9] • the fewer masks you need to wear, the happier you will generally be • dropping a mask (or persona) is always a choice, but it comes with consequences

[8/9] • building your view of the world, society, and the people around you only on the masks and personas you get to see is damaging, because you end up basing your understanding of reality on a performance

[5/9] • some people will try to impose their perception of you onto you • you owe them nothing but rejecting their projection may have consequences

[6/9] • most people wear masks even around their loved ones • if you find someone who allows you to feel genuine and drop your masks, cherish that relationship (but make sure doing so doesn’t require you to adopt new masks in exchange)

[3/9] • a single person can use multiple personas, some of which you will never get to know • all public figures use personas, even if they claim to be completely authentic

[4/9] • masks and personas are used either out of fear or for personal benefit • we tend to project our own fears and motivations onto others, so it is worth giving people the benefit of the doubt

i’ll beat this drum over & over again: game devs obsessing over Steam as if it’s the only viable platform is self-sabotaging and potentially the death of their business. case in point: rift riff was designed for Steam with $30k marketing spent. yet it makes 6X on the App Store with $0 on marketing

Honestly, I didn't expect playing #Quake in 2026 to be this satisfying. And I can't remember feeling this level of hyper-focus! Even programming, which is my daily work, rarely gets me there anymore. Although it comes with a price – the intensity exhausts me faster than 30 years ago.

... and some buy a pro gaming mouse that costs an absurd amount of money by the standards of their teenage selves, then replay from beginning to end the game that probably had the greatest impact on their adolescensce.

As for the 42-second run of E1M1 – not great, not terrible, I'd say... not a world record, far from it. But every every perfectly-landed shotgun shell brings joy! As does 21-st kill just before exiting the level. 😌

Turns out, Quake is just like riding a bike – muscle memory is eternal. Tolkien definitely was onto something about the fingers recalling their strength when they once more grasp a sword. Or a mouse! XD

Yeah, about the mouse... You see, everyone handles the mid-life crisis differently. Some buy sports cars or loud motorcycles. Some take up pottery or start tending the garden. Others immerse themselves in the pleasures of a willing body half their age...

30th anniversary of #Quake release evokes all the good memories and the irresistible urge to experience it all again. And it's still possible to configure the visuals exactly as in 1996 with 256 colors and overscaled textures.

P.S.: It turns out it's not that straightforward to download a legally obtained Quake and then even launch it on an Apple Silicon macbook but it's doable.

I recently quit Phonopolis mid-game. Not because it's bad – it's gorgeous and well-made – but because it was not the experience I expected to have when I launched it. It seemed like a good material for a blog post, so there you go: blog.vigeo.dev/post/8267452... #gamedev #indiedev #gamedesign

Analyzing why I bounced off Phonopolis made me realize my own detective game, Wright Files: Egerton's Pickle, risks the exact same problem if players expect a traditional point-and-click rather than a real-time investigation.

TL;DR: The issue came down to puzzle design: deductive reasoning vs. what I call “tinker-toys” (isolated contraptions solved purely through trial-and-error poking). When a game chains six tinker-toys back-to-back with no downtime, mental fatigue sets in fast.

Whole streamlined workflow in action. After the initial setup (model clustering, setting up export pipeline) from @blockbench.net to #Unity within seconds. Still a bit rough around the edges and with some issues but already usable in “production”. 🥳 #gamedev #indiedev #lowpoly

After additional work on the prototype of my vertex coloring plugin for @blockbench.net I'm able to apply vertex colors and directly export them into #Unity. No more destructive mesh operations with ProBuilder, the workflow is a breeze now! 😌 #gamedev #indiedev #lowpoly

Prototyping a (yet another) Vertex Colors plugin for @blockbench.net: works in Edit Mode (with color/palette panels), semi-transparent colors on the palette, FBX export... Attaching a video since it's easier to show than explain! 😄 Would anyone find this useful? #Blockbench #gamedev

I'm fully aware that the current wave of reports about AI “escapes” and jailbreaks is mostly FUD and clickbait. Still, I'm baffled that the main reaction is just “cool story, bro” with AI companies spinning it as a flex: “look how awesome our models are”...

Random fact about “Wright Files: Egerton's Pickle”: initial version of the inventory system was very versatile. Too versatile in fact: player, drawers, cupboards, wardrobes, and even items had separate inventories. Items could be stored inside other items. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegames

Eventually I’ve simplified this system because it brought no gameplay value. Items are now automatically picked up when an object is searched. Putting items inside objects or other items was removed, except where justified by the story. This allowed for tighter gameplay and less player confusion.

Sometimes we build things because we can, not because they are needed, forgetting the old wisdom: game design is not about adding things – it’s about removing things until there is nothing left to remove.

Social nightmare of every introvert detective: surrounded and overwhelmed by NPCs waiting for interaction. #detective #mystery #adventure #game #indiegames #gamedev #indiedev
