They knew this 1,000-year-old archaeological site was here. It had been mapped, published, and reported to the agencies responsible for the land. Trump's border-wall contractors bulldozed right through it /1 Link: youtu.be/A4U6q76eqUM

@flintdibble.bsky.social has a video about this up on YouTube. I wasn't able to watch it all, but the first... 40 minutes, I guess? That at least was very good.

The Las Playas Intaglio, a giant fish carved into the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, is now considered the oldest example in the Americas of a geoglyphic, the ancient art form that is carved into or drawn on the ground. nbcnews.to/4j0Wyo9

Strong recommend checking this out, lots of detailed information about the incredible indigenous archaeological heritage being blasted for the border wall in clear violation of principles of tribal sovereignty and with total disregard for the value of these treasures to these people and the world

The part that worries me most is what we DON’T know. Earlier archaeological surveys often covered much narrower strips than today’s construction corridor. Some sites may be damaged before archaeologists ever get a chance to find them. /6

During Trump’s first term, contractors used explosives at Monument Hill in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The Tohono O’odham Nation said the blasting damaged a sacred ancestral place. A later GAO investigation documented those concerns. /4

Now the bulldozers are back. Crews are clearing land near Quitobaquito Springs, a sacred O’odham place in Organ Pipe. And the Tohono O’odham Nation is fighting a separate wall project along its own reservation boundary. /5

This is Las Playas. It’s an enormous intaglio scraped into the desert. You can see its outline from above. But from ground level, it looks like… basically nothing. That’s the problem. Some archaeological sites are almost invisible unless you know exactly what to look for /2

And Las Playas isn’t isolated. The border cuts through an extraordinary archaeological landscape: ancient trails, rock art, farming settlements, sacred springs, burial places, and sites nobody has found yet. This landscape has been lived in for millennia. /3

Permafrost is disappearing, causing geological collapse, so structures both on top of, and within the soil, are damaged, too.

Destruction can reveal what is hidden, right before that is also destroyed. And the climate crisis won't just wipe away our past if we don't start taking it serious together.

I wrote several years ago about police officer’s verbal orders and how they’re designed to justify violence.

nbcnews.comOpinion | Obeying police has become a dangerous Catch-22. This video proves why.The system as it exists makes it almost impossible for Black and brown Americans to avoid harm.
Kelly@broadwaybabyto.bsky.social

ICE agents give contradictory orders on purpose. “You f*cking move I’ll f*cking tase you! Get out of the f*cking car!” It’s a no win situation. The person being violently accosted in this video is a disabled veteran. Imagine if the agents had been wearing shock gloves? Abolish & prosecute ICE

This is not a crisis of universities but an utter failure of government. If Labour was serious about turning UKHE around they could (by removing the overseas student levy, to start). UKHE is in absolute freefall and is in completely danger of becoming unrecoverable.

The media consistently ignore that UK higher education and research are in a massive financial (manufactured by several governments) and public trust crisis (manufactured by the same media). What is the resignation of *one* professor against the redundancies of *hundreds* who did their jobs well?!

Chris Bertram@crookedfootball.bsky.social

I don't deny the Arday resignation is important news, but to have it as the top item on the Guardian, Times and Telegraph websites says something about the weight they all give to culture wars over substantive news on politics, the economy, the environment, international conflict etc

Everyone's comparing Nolan's Odyssey to Homer, but I think there's much more richness The ancient Greeks adapted the Odyssey into ART While these images might appear static to us, I want to walk through how an ancient Greek saw art: AS DYNAMIC STORYTELLING like our films 1/13

Great passage!

New today: me in the Berlin Review, responding to @sentantiq on Nolan's Odyssey, but also on the collapse of literacy in contemporary America, senses of apocalypse in the humanities, and a relevant new Hölderlin translation: blnreview.de/en/ausgaben/...

The next blockbuster: The Sea People Heroes: Rameses the Great & Ammurapi of Ugarit Villain: Odysseus Plot twist: climate change caused mass migration Final scene: Phoenician makes it out of Ugarit with an iron sword Film-making twist: archaeologists consulted Chris Nolan: call me Visuals:

I wrote about the Trojan horse, and what we can learn from her mouth about different cultural attitudes towards deception and violence. As someone comments below, the phrase GIFT ARTICLE is pretty scary in this context.

Chris Suellentrop@suellentrop.bsky.social

Turns out @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social knows a lot about ancient epics www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Reading the Odyssey in 1996: - savor every page - idly look up words in ancient Greek that intrigue you - enjoy the metaphors and monsters - read aloud the poetic turns of phrase - don't overthink the characters - revel in history and myth Reading the Odyssey in 2026:

Reading the Odyssey in 2026 - compare 6 translations for each passage: 18th, 19th c, prose, verse, woke & great man versions - closely read the translation you hate most to bitch on social media - see how Nolan did Odysseus them dirty - feel secret guilt in every bad deed - revel in history & myth

Do you hear that? That's the sound of a million scholars around the world rejoicing as people turn away from their phones towards books written thousands of years ago
