"The fundamental questions of the humanities concerning what and how we express a point of view or create a vision of the world is already at work when we ask about the future and try to fathom its possible forms."

An international conference on Palestine was due to take place in @maynoothuniversity.ie this weekend. The organisers rightly postponed it due to the cruel denial of student visas to Gaza students.

'Now entering its 21st week and with no end in sight, the current strike involving University and College Union (UCU) staff is the longest in living memory in British higher education, originating from a staff marking boycott in April over proposed job cuts.'

Okay, I deleted the original post because people didn't check the link at all and mistook my typo of "young men" seriously.
I clearly meant young women.
Not sure why this isn't a bigger story, but I read this entire report today. It's gutting.

Did you know that Intersex Awareness Day is October 26 to memorialize public protest against the pro-genital-cutting @ameracadpeds.bsky.social ?
Yep, the AAP has historically been pretty evil when it comes to forced genital cutting of children.

Irish universities have followed the UK model of charging high fees to non-EU students to subsidise teaching and research. A sharp fall in visa approvals combined with a €250,000 shortfall in government funding is now putting the squeeze on university funding. #HigherEducation#Ireland#SpéirGhorm

Humanities dissertations have fallen by 49 percent since 2015, compared with a drop of 4.5 percent in the social sciences, according to a new analysis of nearly 445,000 dissertations in these two fields over 65 years. Explore the data: https://chroni.cl/4yxUZ4S
College of Arts & Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington has an open dean position. Please apply if you don't want to shut down the humanities and aren't an AI shill.
Job ad basically says: promote AI + keep the humanities in check (prevent them from making a fuss):

“‘There’s no way to sugarcoat this,’ Lau told them. Springer Nature felt that Scientific American’s criticism of Trump was threatening their broader business—selling subscriptions to their scientific journals. The federal government was a major client.”
Last summer, Scientific American's owners were stalking the site, making sure it wasn't being too critical of Trump. This summer, the magazine was sold and gutted. I wrote about it for The Nation www.thenation.com/article/soci...
appreciate well-intentioned invites to "important" AI discussions but most of the time folks have decided the outcome through their "it is inevitable" framing. no thanks

This is a desperately uncomfortable post. After putting off some dental work because I couldn't afford it, I'm now in the position of needing $16K of work so that I can do basic things like eat. I don't have an extra $16k (who does??). ko-fi.com/catedenial

I knew I wanted a 3d chemical editor easy enough for undergrads and high school students to use - but would work for #compchem research too
I wrote a "manifesto" for @avogadro.cc
No one should be touched without their consent. Even - and, given the rates of abuse of children by family members and caregivers, perhaps especially - by family.
Children have the right of bodily autonomy. Adults do not have a right to intimacy with those bodies, including hugs.
Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism.
Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children.

We have always encouraged our kids to understand have bodily autonomy and to be confident in asserting it in *any* circumstance. This makes them stronger, not weaker. It shouldn't really be more complicated than that imo.

"the combination of universities’ self-image as incubators & world-leading labs of climate action & innovation, paired with the obscene energy bloat & fossil fuel hunger of generative AI. It’s something a little worse than mere hypocrisy, more in line with betrayal & treachery." - @ketanjoshi.co

I love pymatgen. I started using it and contributing to it in 2018, back when I was just 21. So grateful to be included in this retrospective, alongside the massive (and still growing) pymatgen community.

New pymatgen preprint. I am one of 166 authors and 7 first authors. We spent 1.5 years and longer on this paper! Just finding the co-authors was a massive amount of work.

These choices, none necessary, none innocent, serve to legitimize a tool that is causing growing social, political, environmental, educational, and epistemological harm, that threatens the very foundations of science and research.
#criticalAI
I have been consistently opposed to this uncritical stance during the paper's drafting and (unfortunately) consistently ignored. While I (perhaps wrongly and hypocritically) chose to keep my name on this paper in order for my contributions not to be erased, I continue to stand in opposition.

As dope as I think this paper and pymatgen are, and as glad as I am to be recognized for my contributions, I must challenge the paper's frankly uncritical discussion of "LLM-based agents" and "AI-driven workflows", as well as its use of LLMs for analysis.

“Austerity creates corporate universities,” @tressiemcphd.bsky.social said. “Corporate universities are not healthy educational organizations, and unhealthy educational organizations cannot inculcate or defend academic freedom.”
Whew. That’s it right there.

there is a piece to be written about this "no contact" as a very specific kind of moral panic about status, intergenerational mobility, and maybe dementia. because it is wild how much this no contact thing riles up older people.
Another one.
The premise: Young people are cutting off their parents for minor mistakes and misunderstandings.
The lead anecdote: A woman severs ties with her family for refusing to get vaccinated before her wedding — to a man who *lost his mother and brother to COVID*

there's a lot to this
even in many FT/TT jobs (now vanishing) your real intellectual community are people you see once a year at a conference; perhaps your employer pays for you to attend and perhaps not
your job itself is a constant effort to prove to your "institution" that your job should exist
The other thing that is missing here is that the turn to online platforms among millennial humanities academics isn’t all about declining opportunities in the academy; it’s also about the rupturing of the possibilities for intellectual camaraderie within the neoliberal university.
Okay, maybe someone here can help. Which countries have tenure, which means academics who can't be thrown out EVEN IF THEY CLOSE THE DEPARTMENT OR THE UNIVERSITY, and which do not? Italy and Germany do. USA, UK, Sweden and the Netherlands do not.
Other data points?
