A problem with calls for more viewpoint diversity in academia, or journalistic “balance”, is that they effectively treat all viewpoints as equivalent. This article explains clearly why all viewpoints should not be treated equally, and why we should reject morally odious views on those grounds alone

Speaking as a person who has had their own brain cooked by the endorphins I get from firing hot-takes into the webosphere, I don't think we want politicians cooking their brains by firing hot-takes into the webosphere.

“The Government explained that non-consensual touching was OK, as long as the intent wasn't sexual. So, as long as it was meant strictly non-sexually, Jim O'Callaghan could slide his fingers up my nostrils. I don't want that for me. I don't want that for anyone.” www.thegist.ie/the-gist-the...

Social investment in universities to independently pursue knowledge for its own sake is the greatest driver of innovation we've every known. That is *the* message, and our leaders aren't doing nearly enough to help policy makers understand it.

University "strategies" have been nothing more than PR exercises that have ignored the ground shifting beneath our feet. We've turned a blind eye to our reliance on international student fees for as long as we could, and now it's coming home to roost.

RTÉ News@news.rte.ie

Universities are to tell an Oireachtas committee that they are at capacity and teetering on a cliff-edge unless the Government addresses a funding gap in higher education.

And politicians won't care because they'd rather listen to a Collision brother than a university president, and because their Zeitgeist comes from facebook and x.

In one afternoon FF/FG ministers came down like a tonne of bricks on a rape crisis centre when they spent weeks hiding while Musk's Nazi website they use was producing CSAM. Like many of you, I really really hate these bastards.

This report contains plenty of quotes to help your local TDs know that (a) pandering to bots costs real life votes and: (b) will make you just so mad a second time if you read it. www.rte.ie/news/2026/10...

(to be clear, I am an ignorant novice on an uncountable set of topics but of course the difference is that my opinions on those topics have zero impact on anyone else's life)

The core value of a university is rooted in the independent pursuit of knowledge for it's own sake. In this pursuit, universities will inevitably develop apparent strengths in specific areas of knowledge production - but (!) these arise in unpredictable ways. They are not built. They emerge...

Universities need a strategic approach to doctoral collaboration with societal actors, especially for collaborative doctorates. Key factors include choosing focus areas and partners aligned with the university’s research profile, strengths and priorities. https://bit.ly/4ev3KoD

It is thus a folly in my view to identify today's strengths and make them the basis for strategy. We are not strengthened by command and control. When the knowledge we produce leads to major innovations, it almost always seems as if it was by accident. They emerge from free inquiry, not strategy.

I understand when outsiders, politicians, etc don't immediately understand this and its our job to inform them. But it's infuriating when it comes from inside the house.

I once tweeted "how do people cope with knowing that most of their research will never matter" and holy shit the responses I got for that one left me scarred lol. But I learned it's probably useful to be conscious of your own insecurities so you don't reflexively see them in others' posts! 😜

Before I get any more strangely defensive responses, I teach critical appraisal of health research as an expert in more quantitative methods, and I'm just looking to find and follow people who engage in critical appraisal of more qualitative research.
