Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

300,000 fewer people in BC voted in 2026 than in 2024. 197,000 people voted Green. The NDP got 250,000 fewer votes than in 2024. The Green Party got 20,000 more. I'm getting real tired of people blaming a party that consistently gets its voters to the polls just because their party can't. #bcpoli

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

It does appear the "data center eliminated Nazi and otherwise fuckface bots" narrative is basically wishcasting, it does show you how popular getting rid of this shit would broadly be, and that maybe a smart person should run on it.

Kate Starbird@katestarbird.bsky.social

Y’all, I hate to rain on the dead bot parade, but the Yandex data center destruction doesn’t seem to have significantly impacted social media bots. I made temporal graphs of X posts about AfD around the time of the attack and there’s no sign of a sudden dip or residual impact on that conversation.

The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.

I know it’s hard to watch all these beautiful things be carried away by time and see the wrong things growing in their place. But listen. Listen. We have to be the beautiful things now. It has to be us. It has to be us. Courage.

EVERY STORY ABOUT BEAVERS FOR THE LAST DECADE READS LIKE: WE RELEASED A DOZEN PADDLE TAILED LITTLE FREAKS AND THEY IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A TERRAFORMING PROJECT THAT REVERSED A CENTURY OF ECOLOGICAL DAMAGE IN THREE WEEKS.

This post is unavailable.

Y'all, The Vampire Lestat was bad. Really, really bad. Not "the book was better" bad. More like "what the fuck did I just watch?" bad. The last two episodes were two of the most tedious two hours of media I've ever sat through. Sam Reid killed it though. (With what he was given to work with.)

They lied about killing Silverio Villegas González in Sept too. They think, with good reason, that it's easier to get away with summary executions of Mexican men. If you were enraged by the executions of Renee Good & Alex Pretti, you should be enraged by the execution of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. 3/3

Yesterday's pipeline announcement is yet another reminder that Prime Minister Carney cares more about lining the pockets of his corporate friends than upholding the Constitutional rights of Indigenous peoples and protecting the public from the escalating climate emergency. (1/6)

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

Fuck the reflecting pool. This has not gotten nearly enough coverage or generated the proper outrage. People thrown in prison for 30-50 years for the "crime" ofmaking zines and belonging to a book club!! This is straight-up totalitarian atrocity. Political prisoners thrown in a gulag to rot.

IDGAF if someone has an "unfair advantage" in children's sports because the point of children's sports is for children to move their bodies, play, and build team skills. They should be co-ed anyway, because in the big grown-up world boys and girls and thems need to work together.

The BC NDP coming up with this dumbass scheme to bail out private developers with the same amount of money, or more, that used to go to purpose-built affordable rentals is especially galling. I truly don't know what's wrong with these people. It's such bad optics on every level.

cbc.ca'Catastrophic' decision to scrap affordable rental program leaves projects in limbo | CBC NewsThe province announced it is reallocating nearly $1.4-billion worth of housing investments, including pausing any funding through the Community Housing Fund. Eve Rickert (she/her) reposted

It's 100% about bailing out developers who misjudged the market. Because it's not enough that we let developers basically run the housing market, to the detriment of pretty much anyone who isn't able to afford million dollar properties, we also have to protect the developers from their own mistakes.

FWIW, I interviewed with LabX Media last year for a marketing job with Discover. Ultimately it came down to “too much experience/too senior” like most of my interviews. I found the people I spoke with were professional and really nice. I hope this goes as well as it can, SciAm friends.

Asher HELLbein@asherelbein.bsky.social

Employees at Scientific American were told today that the magazine has been sold to LabX Media Group, the outfit that runs Discover Magazine and IFLScience. And that means -- of course! -- editorial layoffs. The media mass extinction rolls ever onward.

So it seems either I’ve healed enough, or the relationships of the specific people involved in this fantasy (which is nowhere near becoming reality BTW), to each other and to me, are healthy enough, that KTP suddenly seems workable/healthy to me again (under certain circumstances).
