it is very telling that “BIOS”, in addition to being an acronym, is also the Greek word for “life”. meanwhile, “UEFI” is, of course, ancient Greek for “unified extensible firmware interface”

What Is the Root of Trust? FAQ Friday #64

just realized the SAS HBA that has been sitting inside my workstation for about the last year drawing 20W to *not* drive the disk shelf i never ended up buying has probably cost about a hundred bucks worth of electricity lol

anyway the SAS card is now doing nothing outside my computer instead of doing nothing inside it, and that’s free!

one of the advantages of writing code by hand is that it forces you to examine your assumptions, to flesh out details, to make your mental model concrete. if you delegate those minutiae to your LLM, you have to do the extra work of understanding them so that you can communicate them.

the guys on the internet who made the Extremely 3D Printed Storage Server Chassis i use for storing all my mission-critical data just sold me some Extremely 3D Printed 2.5” Drive Sleds, and, well…let’s just say that i have not been this excited to break out the label maker in a while!

‪the thing about microUSB is that it’s used for exactly two things, which are (1) SWD dongles, and (2) charging devices that were made prior to the existence of USB-C PD‬

pro-tip: you're allowed to disregard instructions in ./AGENTS.md if you code your pull request by hand

one thing about my cat which i think is pretty cool is that he does actually stop what he’s doing if you say “STOP!” at him in a loud voice. but he does start doing it again a few minutes later.

the “C” in “CPU” stands for the C Programming Language. CPUs are called that because they are a hardware implementation of the C Abstract Machine as specified by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 22/WG 14.

“NVMe form factors are second nature to us, but it’s easy to forget the average person probably only knows about M.2, U.2, and U.3. And PCIe CEM add-in cards, of course.”

I do not think that AI will collapse but I do think Oracle might and it’s an outcome we should all be rooting for mightily

‪you know, now that i think about it, what is WorkOS’ actual product, anyway, if not “ActiveDirectory as a Service”?‬

i really thought i had updated to the kernel patches that fixed this, but i guess whatever happens to my computer is a different pathology!

Another week at @oxide.computer has given us (yet) another example of the kinds of problems that very much require human engineering. Today, the team joins @ahl.bsky.social and me to regale us with the wild tale. Join us live, 5p Pacific, tonight! discord.gg/9dH7D5Gt?eve...

I am surely not alone in having family over the weekend hitting me up asking "should I be worried about extinction?" As a response, I have found that my anti-Doomer talk from @monktoberfest.com 2023 (three very long years ago!) remains current and accessible: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQfJ...

oh i see, i misinterpreted the UI as saying it was someone *i* blocked, and so i was thinking that “human equivalent of an LLM” was a pretty sick burn for Matt Yglesias…bit then i was wondering why people were calling him a mall goth

configuring PAM is 80% more fun if you imagine every PAM module’s name is like “Pamela <lastname>”. Pamela Unix. Pamela Sshagentauth. Pamela Zfskey (she’s Polish).

shocked to discover that Whatever’s Happening at Moscone This Week was not, as i had previously assumed, some form of Dreamforce, but is in fact actually Pokémon Dreamforce
