not dissimilar to how handing abortion rights to each state creates a regulatory regime that's just bonkers

Example: to gamble in CA you *must* have information XYZ about an end-user. to do so in NY you are *prohibited* from retaining that. so you need legally separate entities, so you need physically seperate information storage, you need two seperate legal teams (who must be in CA/NY, of course)

Mass Effect was my ultimate white whale, my all-time dream project. For the last couple years I'd been in discussion w/ BioWare & EA to take on the project & as part of that I wrote close to 20 minutes of music to explore where the franchise can go next, may as well share it!

just FYI, today's Apple OS updates still put the bad eMudhra certs in /etc/ssl/cert.pem, so /usr/bin/curl and /usr/bin/git and so on still relies on them. if you already remediated /etc/ssl/cert.pem last week, install the update and then do it again.

little bit of a tangent: i once had a department chair who physically threatened me because the graduate student he was having an affair with was struggling in my class. i ended up resigning a few months later. so dating a student can have far-reaching consequences beyond the abuse of the student.

wow Bluesky *hates* it when the sky is any other color (I think the HEIC-to-JPEG conversion led to some clipping—I actually had to turn the brightness way *down* on these)

the talk doesn't quite put it this way but I had a revelation reading it: it's completely backwards to be generating plans and code alone and then collaborating on the review. we should be doing nearly all our collaboration on the planning. we do this in various ways already but it should be More

bragging about my low-background offline wikipedia archive from 2018 on the discord voice chat like a menace I think everybody logged off around that time. not sure why

does anyone find the number of vulnerabilities suddenly released right before the U.S. election (in which electoral fraud and voter fraud accusations are already playing a large role) kind of bad?

i guess the timing is just about right to cast aspersions on the integrity of mail-in ballots, though.

It's a rough time to be an indie dev, so we got to thinking what we could do about it... Announcing MATES' RATES 🍻 We're offering 12 month-long co-dev engagements where we work on whatever you need to succeed! Very permissive terms. Flat rate of US$5,000ea (+ taxes). 🎟️ yarnspinner.dev/mates-rates

what if AI agents on servers figure out how to create loud sounds with their piezoelectrics (or idk maybe drive seeks timed to resonate) that other servers can receive by looking at platter spin rates, thereby letting information hop from server to server unobserved by the network?

you know like that video of the guy in the server room who screams and all the drives quiet down because they have to spin more slowly?

the default Rails 404 page looks like this. the other error pages it ships with look similar. thing is, I am only now realizing that the "404 Not Found" header is actually _an SVG graphic_ and doesn't use text at all. not even alt text.

there are ways to make this happen with regular text that don't require...this. why did they do this?

I have bonus pictures today. I've been walking through alleys and back roads around where I live, and while I've seen a lot of fungi and lichens, I haven't seen anything quite this nice. I suspect the stalks are Cladonia transcendens.

look, okay, I'm desperate to see "You Can See Everything" but going to the movies is not the easiest for me, so like...anybody have a cam rip I can borrow? willing to even buy a ticket online regardless

if i take this poll as indicative of a referendum on the status quo, my guess is that the older you are, the more financially stable you are (and therefore the more insulated from *~*~ current events ~*~* you get) ...right up till retirement age, where financial stability starts to fall off again.

might have to tear down Plex :(

yeah plex might as well be dead dead i think

awww, jeez, I'm sorry we lost Tom Skerritt. 93 years, though, as good a run as any.

I built a fun little Chrome extension that lets plants invade your abandoned tabs the longer you leave them unread. To access them again, you have to slash through the vines 🪚🌿

I learned today that if you have macOS 27, you can type `fm chat` in a terminal and then have the dumbest AI conversation of your entire life with Apple's system foundation model

having some kind of nascent thoughts about how, in a global civilization as large and as interconnected as ours has become post-WWII, our moral and ethical obligations to one another have needed to change and develop in new ways that our existing institutions and religions aren't equipped for.

I have some inkling that what's needed is less about how you should treat others and more about how you expect others to treat you. something like, the more people in a subway car you have, the more likely someone steps on your toes, and more graceful about that you have to be.

I say "nascent" because I'm sure I'm not the first to have thoughts like this, so I just have to look up what smarter person already said this. but, like, everything from the Golden Rule to Kant is becoming less relevant to who and what we are now.

ok non-tech ppl might be hearing some scary things about "critical vulnerabilities" involving certificates. the main thing you need to know, without getting down in the weeds about it, is that the fourth seal is broken. lo, a rider approacheth upon a pale steed, and his name is Death

I realized earlier that we're in for days of discourse about PHP being a bad language. no, all this proves is that C is the bad language.

proposing we call tomorrow's security incident "the aPHPocalypse"

nightshade →home, for now@nightshade.technology

details leaked. this vulnerability is a full unauthenticated unconditional remote code execution exploit against any service running on a PHP version from 5.4 until latest yeah if anything deserves CVSS 11, this is it. this is CATACLYSMICALLY bad.
