i worked at a spirit halloween in college for less than a month. do not ever do this. interview consisted of my manager asking what i'd do if i arrived at work to find him murdered; quit bc he accused me of stealing $$ from the register to buy & eat a pizza. was very allergic to dairy at the time

This post is unavailable.

ME: so your theory is that i stole from the register, went to get food i'm allergic to, brought it BACK to the scene of the crime, ate it, and left the box...? HIM: i just think if you were REALLY innocent you'd eat some cheese right now to prove it makes you sick ME: hmm i see. goodbye forever

this was a spirit halloween in athens, ohio, where one of the country's largest halloween parties takes place. you might think this would mean the store and/or its customer base would bring their A game! and you would be extremely wrong

I don’t have enough paid sick days left to call in sick on Oct. 8 to stay home & read Dylan Morrison’s latest book, so I will be a grownup about it (this time) (unlike the last time)

My next book, Comfort Read, is out October 8th! It's a queer fake dating romcom full of heart and feelings and a bookstore cat and people (but never cats) making fools of themselves. I'm awful at talking about my books so here some of the early reviews in which other people talk about it instead 😄

obsessed already, i LOVE fake dating an embarrassing amount and cats a normal and correct amount

yeahhhh the dark forest theory is a stone cold bummer. i think of my fave alternative as the Prime Directive theory: that whatever else is out there, it tries not to see or be seen by us to avoid influencing our development before we're ready, due to a deep respect/love for life of all kinds

Midnight Coffin@midnightcoffee.bsky.social

Dark forest theory pisses me off so much. Imagine the brain rot required to look to the night sky and see only foreign invaders.

can you lure flies out of your home by turning OFF all the interior lights, turning ON an exterior light, holding the door open and waiting for them to fly out? yes. will doing so make every witness laugh at you? also yes. does this method essentially make you a butler for flies? i mean... a bit...

"you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" wrong. nonsense. shut up. if you stay alive, insist on kindness, and never stop looking for opportunities to help others, you might just live long enough to see yourself become dolly parton

while they're at it, they should consider creating some sort of agency to monitor our food production systems. maybe one that researches, crafts and enforces best-practice food handling regulations designed to prevent the spread of dangerous bacteria & parasites? and... shit, wait. hang on a second

sometimes being trans is hilarious: few weeks ago i went to grab a sandwich, and i recognized the dude behind the counter from a place i used to eat like 10yrs ago. i asked if he'd worked there, he said yeah, i said i used to go there and it was nice to see him, he said thanks. end of convo. nbd. 🧵

tbh i'm sure this guy would have perfectly chill if i'd said "actually man that was me, as it turns out you can trans your gender," or whatever. in my experience the vast majority of people simply don't give enough a shit what anyone gets up to make things uncomfortable (the assholes are just loud)

but it made me laugh, & was oddly nice for me. i don't have to give a shit either! i can be my own twin sister if i want to! i can choose to simply eat my goddamn sandwich. a neat little reminder that your life's gonna be weird and funny and sometimes wonderful but most of all, it's gonna be yours

now, there was a time i would have panicked & been completely awkward in one of several different ways. felt compelled to leave without replying; felt compelled to come out as trans to him and thus everyone in the sandwich line; felt compelled to say some weird irrelevant nonsense to distract him.

but i didn't miss a beat: "HAHA YOU KNOW IT BRO. SURE DO! MY SISTER, WHO DEFINITELY WAS NOT ME. WENT THERE ALL THE TIME." he asked if we were twins & i said YOU BET. he asked what happened to her & i said she moved away, and you know what? so true. she moved far far away and she is not coming back.

i did NOT say, "tho i am now a beardy hobbit man, you may recall me as a blonde girl whose vibe was usually 'creature that just escaped from decades trapped in an abandoned salt mine.'" i'm not trying to go into all that at my sandwich joint. they do a nice sandwich! that's all i'm about in there.

but the other day i went in there again and my guy is behind the counter once more. and he goes, "dude, can i ask you something?" so i brace myself for Uncomfortably Personal Conversation! At The Deli, but then he says, "you got a sister who used to eat at that other place i worked?"

There is no version of yourself you could become that would satisfy the people who hate you. So you might as well be who you are.

this might be a little kooky, but if i'm honest, i prefer my international human rights organizations to have a moral backbone stronger than that of a chocolate éclair

WATCHING THE RESIDENT, EARLY SEASONS: okay, sure, an inoffensive if somewhat mid medical drama. why not? look, the dude from gilmore girls is here! WATCHING THE RESIDENT, LATE SEASONS: we can all agree that this hospital has been cursed by 10,000 witches

yeah, look, fascism is "if you give a mouse a cookie." or, if you prefer, "if you let a mouse take a cookie on what it falsely insists are rational and/or moral grounds." convincing yourself that a few concessions will appease them is a trap; in fact, all it does is prove you're willing to concede

Mekka Okereke@mekka.mekka-tech.com

I'm not voting for a candidate that wants fascism for trans kids, but safety for me. Don't try to sell me that you're worried about rising fascism, if you think there's enough of a safety margin to throw away the 5% to 10% of anti-fascist votes that you will lose by backing an anti-trans candidate.

One more task for today: call your senators about HR 2616 The "Don't Say Trans" bill literally states it's "defending women from gender ideology." Cis women, I am deputizing you especially. Please make several phone calls to tell them to knock it the fuck off.

trans people will also continue to be around your whole life. you'll be sharing bathrooms & communities w/ us your whole life; we'll be there whether you know we're trans or not. this horrific moment will eventually pass but transness will not, and our memories of how you act now will also remain

It's true what they say: no one achieves anything alone. So I want to take a moment to thank my publishers at Storm, my friends and family, @hannahbond.bsky.social whose guidance is always invaluable, and everyone who has read or shared something about one of my books. can't say it shocks me to see one history's most pathetic Divorce Guys cooking up reasons to beef with a movie version of our foundational Area Man Just Wants To Go Home To His Wife story

this is a distinction i try to draw as often as possible: being trans is great! so interesting, so eye opening, so rewarding! a lottery win, both in terms statistical rarity of experience and how much unique joy it brings to your life! it is TRANSPHOBIA that sucks shit, not being trans itself

it makes me sad when i see trans people talk about how they hate being trans. while it's been tough and made my life harder in ways, it's also been one of the biggest blessings in my life. the perspective on life i have, people i know, and who i am are informed by me being trans
