When I was a teenager there was a lot of heroin going around. Not only the first hit was free, but the stuff was free or very cheap UNTIL ONE WAS ADDICTED.

jess m. ☕🍂@jametc.bsky.social

not to mention AI did the "first hit's free" thing by not charging for AI usage at first, but now that all these companies rely on it, they're driving up the price per token and now AI shit is even more expensive than regular filming expenses

I say "token", because AI usage is literally a slot machine. you pay a token per-slot-machine-lever-pull, and hope you like what you get or you roll again. They do this thousands of times, and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. I'm serious like when i say AI is a huge scam this is partly why

this why I believe abstinence is the only real way, but I know it's hard we have been here before with smoking, where the best thing is never to start & the second best is to stop as soon as you can — and it doesn't matter if one cig a day is "not that bad" if you can go down to one go down to nil

olivia.scienceWe've been here before!Parallels between AI and tobacco, and other warnings.

that's what's so worrying! even so-called critical use still elicits the same feelings that draw you back to any use

Sometimes it just dawns on me how deeply weird and wild this situation is. A company making a crappy, unchecked and badly designed product, but thanks to pre-existing science fiction narratives they can aggressively tout their own failures and inadequacies as reasons for self-regulation

I have been saying the exact same. AI models seems to be built with the goal of impressing non-knowledgeable people. Vibe coders are amazed by the fact that something runs and it made so many lines!

This is 🎯🧪 From a pancreatic cancer researcher in my circle Lately, we have been seeing so many miracles in cancer treatment. We celebrate. That is because we had a great infrastructure that operated efficiently. I don’t want to live in a time when these wins are far off in the rear view mirror.

Was reminded of this by someone's questions to me about how to argue against the (common) claim that LLMs can "summarize", so reboosting as a gentle reminder for you all too

Iris van Rooij 💭@irisvanrooij.bsky.social

Using LLMs in science for “literature review” or “summarizing" is *automated cryptogyny* olivia.science/cryptogyny/ @olivia.science 🧵

“When the bill comes, and the benefits are compared against the costs, will the industry cheerleading and policy flexibility look like the right move? It is getting harder and harder to see how it will have been.” I wrote about how the generative AI will not pay off — for companies or governments.

Ramaswamy has produced an attack ad weaponizing the rape of his opponent, Amy Acton, when she was 12 years old. It features Acton’s mother, who abandoned Acton after she was raped by her step-father, fleeing the state with her husband. Here is the corporate money helping fund that ad.

I think the most telling thing about this is the author's inability to write it without help from AI. Brain literally atrophying before their eyes.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

MIT Media Lab have released "nutritional labels" for different chatbots, giving grades in different areas. This is "greenwashing" for AI. They give GPT a "B-" while it undermines skill development, gives power to a single massive company, damages the environment, is built on stolen labour.

hopefully more agree and will start to also act on this, but as a computational modeller, I think and hope more of us start to spend a little more on what models are (for), who / what they serve, etc. (slides from www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DHg... — not exactly what I said yesterday but very related)

Honoured to be invited and excited to be presenting the work below and other projects I've been working on here later today on models in psychological and cognitive sciences — really looking forward to hearing from the other speakers and panel members too. ☺️

folx, I’ve been working on AI "ethics" for almost a decade now & hate to tell you there’s no such thing as "ethical AI" the only "ethical principle" that works is regulating the shit out of the industry & to take back control of our autonomy, fundamental rights, freedoms & right to exist w/out AI

Robin T. reposted

I will not only be relieved but truly *ecstatic* to be wrong, if more and better studies soon start showing that AI actually improves learning and cognitive motivation. But so far they all show the opposite, and that is consistent with the evidence that I and other educators are seeing on the ground

💯 > The rebranding is also a distraction, redirecting public attention away from resource-pillaging data centers, a fragile economic bubble and rising safety concerns. This is a core MO of the industry to avoid critique and escape regulation. doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
