Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Castillon, the final battle of the Hundred Years War. Fought outside the city of Castillon a day or so's march east of Bordeaux in Gascony/Aquitaine, it saw the combined Anglo-Gascon army led by John Talbot be utterly annihilated by the French.

This year’s Irish Hallowe’en turnip, and a handful of those of from years past (they don’t always make it, if they rot before dessicating) #Hallowe’en #Samhain

My first 5 TTRPGs, in the order I played them: 1. D&D 3.5 2. Savage Worlds 3. Call of Cthulhu 4. Paranoia (run by Gar at Warpcon 2008, also the most recent time I played Paranoia) 5. Firefly Role Playing Game After that probably Dark Heresy, then maybe WHFRP and D&D 2e.

First five rpgs. 1. MERP 2. Red Box D&D 3. Fighting Fantasy 4. Probably some home-brew Aliens thing 5. Probably WHFRP (Order of the last two very hazy). Then at Warpcon IV - Call of Cthulhu, Paranoia.

Absolutely moronic comms. Spread this far and wide. They need to learn this contempt is unacceptable

You may appreciate the naked contempt dripping from this email reply @loremistress93.bsky.social. Just a reminder to all UK creatives that UKGE does not give a shit about you or your opinions, and the recent AI stuff is more than just a simple mistake.

This is true for indie game designers too - if you have ever liked one of my games it would be wonderful if you could talk about, link to it, review it and so on. I’m super grateful to the few who do already; it’s a tiny proportion of people though. Please join that elite band!

piggybacking off this: the most powerful sales technique in the world, for pretty much all of human history, has been word of mouth. If you like something someone made, TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Tell everyone. Leave reviews. Repost. Talk about it. Link to it and link to the artist. We depend on YOU.

The most notable new thing is that I now have an affiliate link/code for @cube4me.bsky.social. If you are buying some of their excellent trays or, like me, a grab bag of wooden bits, if you use my code DrCrossbows you'll get an 8% discount off your order and I'll get a percentage as well.

Finally got back to some Undaunted. Bittersweet to be finally getting into the series right as news of Osprey shuttering is spreading, but damn is it good.

Working at Osprey was, for the most part, truly excellent. The care and attention of some wonderful colleagues were driven by a love of games and the people we hoped would play them; combine that with the excellence and wonder that our dozens of designers and illustrators poured into... 1/2

Starting a bit late because I had some other reading to finish first, but it's officially time to read some spooky books! A Night in the Lonesome October seemed like a fitting place to start.

Question for the few dozen people that buy the digital version of Wyrd Science, what do you read it on? Tablet? Phone? Desktop? Apart from adding hyperlinks it’s basically just the print version as a smaller PDF, but was thinking from the next issue completely redoing it to read nicer on smaller

Today we heard Abdellah Al Jazzar, a student from Gaza who has brought so much to our community in Maynooth, relay messages from students in Gaza waiting to take up thier places in irish unviersities and who Minister Jim O'Callaghan is blocking. Grant the visas now!

Today I am waiting for my immigration appointment in Dublin. It's been a few years since I was last here (I came annually as a student), and it's amazing how it barely changes and yet steadily creeps closer to looking like a dystopian cyberpunk office where we queue for jobs at the murder factory.

Today's work includes writing a short piece on Norwegian folk-belief concerning the magpie. One such belief is that around Saint Olaf's feast-day (July 29), the magpies all visit Saint Olaf in order to be weighed. Those that weigh less than a quarter of a kilo are given to the Devil.

Colleagues in Maynooth, please join on Monday 13:00 at TSI for this rally in support of the Palestinian students whose visas have been denied. We have two fully funded students from Gaza due to come to Maynooth as well as many more at other institutions across Ireland who have been refused visas.
