Even bigger announcement: Skeleton has won Best Paper (top 1%) at IEEE VIS this year!! 🎉 VIS is my home community and I am deeply indebted to many of the people in it. I take a little time to pontificate on what "best paper" means to me (or rather, what I think it should really be about):

This is so cool. I love how it re-scales the colors as you move around the map.

I've made an interactive map for exploring the terrain of the world! It uses @mapterhorn.com data and tiles, and WebGL for dynamic colors and animations. relief.bertspaan.nl/world?lang=en

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

Hiya! Finally motivated to join thanks to @ieeevis.org nudge when registering for IEEE VIS in Boston. Thanks for curating the visualization starter pack to onboard me into something interesting right away.

Really appreciate that the iPhone Duo has an aspect ratio of 1:1.4 (or 1:sqrt(2)). Always appreciate DIN 476/ISO 216 which is just the perfect aspect ratio system for documents.

Shadyside. 5701 Fifth Ave - Third Presbyterian Church. Caller said that lightning struck the top of the spire causing bricks and concrete to fly everywhere. They are also concerned there might be a fire starting as there is a lot of smoke.

This idiot has probably never been to the BOREAL FOREST a day in his life. It is 5.5 times the size of Texas. You cannot "groom" it. It's burning because of climate change. The utter bullshit from these climate deniers. Canadians are sick of this bullying and they are not going to take it.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Rep. Jeff Van Drew: "Canada isn't working because they are so far left. This should be a warning shot to them. You better come to America, say, 'We're sorry, we're gonna mend our ways and do what we used to do and groom and maintain the forest.'"

When using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, don't just make text bigger and bolder to make it a heading. That will work for sighted users, but screen reader users will miss that and just hear it as normal paragraph text. Use actual heading styles, like level 1 through 6.

When reality surpasses fiction! Top: fictional forecast for August 2050, broadcast by French TV in 2014 to warn about the consequences of global warming. Bottom: Real French forecast for yesterday, June 22, 2026.

Oha, das klingt aber nicht gut. Hoffentlich wird das schnell wieder ganz.

Had the weirdest subversion of expectations today. I’m biking 🚲 in the middle of a narrow road when the car behind me honks. I stop and am prepared to be told off by a jagoff driver… but it was a lovely old Pittsburgh lady who wanted to know what shoes and helmet to get for her friend’s son.
