Okay, I'll do some recommendations. Signalis is one of the best horror games ever, a perfect indie Survival Horror that's firing on all cylinders, and the music is incredible.

Hey folks, there's a Halloween scream sale on now, and I don't have it in me to do a recommendation thread at the moment, so if you want to take a look at the discounts. There's some good stuff on sale.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners II thread ep1: a big leap in storytelling and animation direction over almost the entirety of season 1. I really like the multiple characters tied together, dealing with similar themes. King's is immediately a lot more interesting story of chrome dependency than David's story.

But I dig that the series tells a lot through mood, built through music, character VA and even quiet moments. I think the lack of this sort of storytelling was bugging me with season 1 the most.

ep6: hell yeah. D's revenge media experience is a welcome side attraction, that even builds itself as part of his possible redemption arc.

I hope the cool visual storytelling in the beginning wasn’t just a fluke because it touched well on what’s at the heart of a good cyberpunk story: what is being authentic and human like in a society dead set on glamourizing literal depersonification via chrome

ep5: good episode! Although it frustratingly just added more questions on what's going on, especially in regards to Capri and D's background. The frustrating part is that the new questions could be just repetition of the old ones!

Annalynn MD is Dr Mario but with a run-based twist. Definitely gonna pick this up when it comes out. All I wish is that the playfield wasn’t a rotating test tube. The narrow area makes it difficult to keep track of the whole situation. I don’t see why it is like this, other than visual theming.

Had an eye on Prison of Husks for a while but playing it, I don't know. The combat is clunky with a slight delay to most of your actions, including the parry which you are expected to use a lot of. I hope this game gets polished by release as it has a neat look.

Culdcept BEGINS. I'm only familiar in name with the game so when it turns out it's a board game battle RPG, I was curious. It seems neat and the audiovisual presentation is definitely up there, but as deathly allergic to cards I don't see myself picking this up.

Guns of Escathon attempts and I think succeeds in translating the classic ponderous soulslike gameplay to a shooter. Shooting, aiming and reloading is intentionally slow, as you are supposed to keep tabs with new enemies via your updating journal that highlights the enemy's weak points.

ep4: sort of an in-between episode, that only sets up the cliffhanger for the next. Not a lot of character development despite King and Talia having a sort of a heart-to-heart. And the whole cast meeting for the first time, too.

I saw some comments about being disappointed in the season, and I guess if you're looking for the type of action that trundles forward like a runaway train like season 1 did, I can see that. My hope is that there's more to it than that.

ep3: wonder what the payout for this ep's developments are. I still dig they're essentially covering themes from the previous season but also the game.

Also some really good action animation in this ep, like the whole bit with cars crashing around! That’s why you get Trigger!

ep2: still good. My main complaint with S1 was that it was so unevenly produced. This season is way more even in animation quality. I like the character dynamic here, and how the story brings everyone together.

Related to my thread yesterday: this is how games are made! There are countless contributions to a game, so when you see a core team maybe of dozens with literally hundreds credited to support studios or contractors, that doesn't mean anyone worked any less on a given feature of the game.

This post is unavailable.

Per last repost, I don’t think people generally understand how games are funded or how the staff is paid. Even ”small” publisher funded games require credits roll of hundreds of people.

Still, as things are, people working in games are generally happy if you buy the game they worked on even if it doesn’t show up as a number in their bank account. It’s an industry run almost entirely on passion. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work toward a better future!

In a perfect world I think games should generate residuals. Failing that, unions should be out there, demanding better working conditions and fairer salaries to everyone involved, including contractors.

If there’s a stock program available, that is ofc one way to benefit but it’s not a guarantee by no means even if you do your best job *and* the game is a success.

But here’s the rub: as games become ever more expensive to produce, so does the amount and quality of contract made assets too. The number of contractors grows as the work becomes more commonplace.

What this means for those making games, is that the success of a project only benefits them only tangentially. If a studio can keep the lights on and keep you on staff, great! Successful games are also nice to have in your portfolio, meaning you ideally have an easier time getting a new job.

Per last repost, I don’t think people generally understand how games are funded or how the staff is paid. Even ”small” publisher funded games require credits roll of hundreds of people.

Publisher is the one getting paid, first and foremost. Oftentimes the developer studio gains a cut off a sold game only after the pub has reimbursed their funding and profit. Developers are paid a salary and contractors paid a contract fee.

You can see why contract work is so lucrative for studios: the contract can end when necessary in order to save on salaries. It makes sense in production too. Contractors can fill in a gap that is not feasible to be kept as a salaried position.

So I think everyone understands this already, but this is basically a euphemism for "we're hiring fewer full time employees and more contractors and codev studios because we don't have to pay them as much." I wish I could say this was an isolated case but I'm seeing it p much everywhere.

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

Happy 29th anniversary to #Moon: Remix RPG Adventure, which was launched on the PlayStation in Japan on this day in 1997! A stylish and strange "Anti-RPG" that we love. 💚 You should play it! - Or don't! - The devs might understand. Review: www.rpgfan.com/review/moon/

The reason AI is having such a direct, negative effect on communal aspects of open source development is precisely due to the nature of AI. Why wouldn’t it, when it acts as a sycophant that enables idea guys to ”””solo develop””” by themselves.

It’s tiresome clout chasing: the idea guys want to be the ”first” to do something, even if it is pointless in the first place.
